Kaduna State Governor has pledged to sponsor the Education of an Almajiri boy who instead of begging for alms like his counterparts do, decided to make a living from shining shoes.


The 13-year-old Usman, who’s an Almajiri from Maiduguri, said he ventured into the business of Shoe shining because he doesn’t like begging; and that he’s out of school because he doesn’t have a sponsor.

Usman’s story was posted by a Twitter user with username @el_bonga, and from there the Governor read about him.

El Bonga’s twitter post goes as thus; This is 13-year-old Usman, an Almajiri boy from Maiduguri. Because he doesn’t like to beg, he learnt how to shine and repair shoes from his brother where he earns an average of N500 a day. When I asked him about school, he said: “even if I want to school, no one will sponsor me.”

Governor El-Rufai reacted to the post and described the boy as “industrious”. His reply goes as thus;

“Where is this industrious boy? How old is he? Kindly bring him to me in Kaduna. I will sponsor him to attend a boarding primary school and upon completion until he graduates from university by the Grace of God.”

There is nothing special about giving to one person what you could have done for an entire generation of a state as a public official. What the people need is a system that works and not an occasional 'sedaka'.

The feeling of excessive gratitude to leaders by the people is what has set northern Nigeria backward. The Elites have succeeded in establishing a systemic pattern that oblige a majority poor to approve and appreciate peanuts.

I weep for the north. A wasted generation of young abled men and women committed to expanding poverty, spreading illiteracy, engineering hatred across all spectrum outside the north. Deprived of education and self esteem, they have accepted peanuts and worshipped the very elites and suppressor.

Oga El-Rufai, this is not how to go about the Al-Majiri System. Historically, the (precolonial) Al-Majiri system was funded tripartitely —Government, Parent and Tax. The Al-Majiris then had ALL the basic necessities of life and other essentials that support learning, with constant monitoring (through education inspectors) by the Emirate... Enough with the story. El-Rufai knows how to tackle the System, only if sincerity is applied.
