It is not an uncommon sight to see people taking a few swigs of alcohol to find quick relief from some sort of pains. Some people actually use alcohol to take their medications, instead of using water. Alcohol is possibly the most widely used “drugs” globally.

Alcohol has the ability to depress the central nervous system, this is why most people still use it for pain relief. Alcohol tends to give a certain form of relief from pain by slowing down the brain and nervous system

Tolerance for Alcohol
The problem with taking alcohol continuously as a form of pain relief is that the body begins to build a tolerance to the effects of alcohol. This means that, in order to get same relief over time, you need to increase the quantity of alcohol you consume. It even becomes more complicated if the alcohol is taken together with pain-killing medications.

In most cases, the quantity of alcohol it would take to relieve severe pain would probably be more than the recommended dosage, even without the tolerance aspect. This would eventually lead to harmful effects on the internal organs, particularly the liver.

Health Risks
There are several deadly long-term health problems including liver problems and stomach ulcers, connected to consuming alcohol excessively over a protracted period of time. Prolonged use of alcohol can lead to chemical dependency on alcohol, leading to lots of health issues.

People who use alcohol with pain-killing drugs to ease some form of chronic pain can encounter more immediate health challenges.

There are warnings on most over-the-counter pain relief drugs against mixing alcohol with other depressants like tranquilizers, yet people still go against this caution. Taking Tylenol with alcohol can cause damage to the lining of the stomach, and can also lead to liver damage. Taking Advil (ibuprofen) with alcohol can cause ulcers and stomach bleeding.
