Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike-Ikwo (FUNAI), Ebonyi State is now 'free' from the national grid

Vice President Osinbajo, today inaugurated the first solar hybrid power plant at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University at Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (FUNAI) in Ebonyi State.

The Federal Government made the project possible, under its Energising Education Programme (EPP), a federal intervention aimed at developing off-grid, dedicated and independent power plants, as well as revamping infrastructure to supply constant power to 37 federal varsities and seven affiliated teaching hospitals.

the project was a collaboration between Rural Electrification Agency, Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Federal Ministry of Environment, as well as National Universities Commission.

Besides the 2.8MW solar hybrid power plant, other programmes include the launch of 7.5 km of solar-powered street lights, as well as a world-class renewable training centre.

It was executed by Sterling & Wilson, a solutions and services provider that gives business solutions for solar, wind energy, transmission and distribution, hybrid energy storage and turnkey data centres to organisations worldwide.

Breakdown of the Hybrid Solar Plant

- 3,500 solar panels installed
- To serve 7,700 students & 1,819 staff
- Total installed capacity = 2.8MW
- 108 jobs created
-2 Hostels
- 68 Academic Buildings
- 287 Street Lights Installed
- 7.5Km Street Lighting Installed
- 2 Transformers
