Insecurity: Deploying Drones, Cctvs In Southwest Is A Waste Of Time - Afenifere by 9jathingsonpoint: 4:52pm On Aug 02, 2019
- Afenifere and Agbekoya Farmers’ Association have expressed doubt over the effectiveness of deploying drones and Closed Circuit Televisions to secure the southwest - The initiative, which was proposed by the federal government, was commended by the Yoruba Council of Elders, who described it as a good idea

- Afenifere says drones will just be a waste of time, saying it is deception of the highest order The proposed plan by the federal government to deploy drones and Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) to secure the southwest has generated mixed reactions from different quarters. While Afenifere and Agbekoya Farmers’ Association expressed doubt over the effectiveness of the proposed plan, the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) described the initiative as a good idea, Vanguard reports

. Legit.ng gathers that Afenifere and Agbekoya Farmers’ Association described the move as a waste of time in solving insecurity. the deployment of drones will not lead to the apprehension of marauding herdsmen.

He said: “We are not aware that drones arrest criminals or drones charge criminals to court. Those are the basic ingredients that are lacking in our land in the last few years. “To now say that you want to deploy drones, what will they do? We are not impressed by that

. What we are asking is for the laws of the land to be enforced against criminals. “These criminals are becoming more emboldened that they are now setting up vigilante in Ondo state because they know that they are living above the laws of the land. “So, deploying drones mean nothing.

As long as they are not willing to enforce the laws of the land by arresting the criminals and make them face justice, drones will just be a waste of time and, in fact, it is deception of the highest order." In the same vein, the national president of Agbekoya Farmers Association, Chief Kamorudeen Okikiola, said CCTV has its own limitation and the deployment of drones has its own limitations,

He said: “Nigeria is different from other advanced countries, which make use of these modern day technologies." Okikiola said that the forests in the southwest cannot be patrolled only by drones, adding that there is need to employ local hunters to secure these forests. Commending the initiative, the acting president of YCE, Colonel Dansaaki Agbede (retd), said: “If it is true, it would be a beautiful idea. Technology has overtaken everything in life."

Legit.ng previously reported that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government announced plans to establish a community policing initiative which will see 40,000 people recruited across the 774 local government areas of the country. In a series of tweets on Thursday, August 1,

the presidency explained that under the guidance of the police, the community police officers would be assigned to states of their residence.

Why Afenifere posing as a stumbling block to this brilliant idea? Maybe they are " zombie" of present-day technology.

I agree that if those arrested are punished in accordance with the law, it will be easier to manage the problem. Right now, people in the villages claim that those arrested by local vigilantes get released without trial. Some even go back to the villages to show that they're above the law. It's annoying and frustrating indeed.

As long as they are not willing to enforce the laws of the land by arresting the criminals and make them face justice, drones will just be a waste of time and, in fact, it is deception of the highest order."
So how do you track and arrest the criminals?

Or will just go and arrest a fulani man rearing his cattle (since they now take the blame for all criminal activities)

Drones and cctv don't arrest, but the footage goes a long way in unmasking the criminals and same are being used in advanced countries.

Those equipment may not solve the problem completely, but incorporating them will be of immense value.

Even if local hunters are to be contracted, the possibility of them getting involved in illicit activities cannot be ruled out and these equipment can clarify some issues.

There's nothing you'll do for Nigerians that they won't complain. Even if its for their own good, they'll still complain.
