The new Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and his deputy, Mrs. Funmi Olayinka, were on Saturday sworn-in by the Acting Chief Judge of the state, Justice Silas Oyewole.

Olayinka, dressed in purple native attire and accompanied by her husband, Lanre, was the first to take the oath of office.

Fayemi was sworn-in as the third democratically elected governor of the 14-year old state at exactly 3:10pm amidst wild jubilation.

Addressing a huge crowd that witnessed the occasion held at the proposed site of the Palm Spring Estate on Iworoko Road, Ado-Ekiti, Fayemi announced to the admiration of the people that his administration would provide free education for all primary and secondary school students in the state.

Fayemi, who was dressed in a white agbada and accompanied by his wife, Bisi, directed all permanent secretaries in the state to revert back to the positions they held as at May 28, 2009.

The new governor, who said that the siege on the state was over, assured that there would be no retaliation. He described his victory as the work of God and thanked the people of the state and all lovers of democracy for standing by him during the struggle.

The governor, whose speech was entitled: ”A new dawn is here,” also promised to review the recently introduced fees in all tertiary institutions in the state by his predecessor.

Ousted governor Segun Oni was stoned by some students of the University of Ado-Ekiti in protest of the new school fees when he went to attend a lecture at the varsity in August.

The announcement by Fayemi triggered a wild jubilation from the crowd.

Fayemi assured that all pregnant women and children below five years, will henceforth enjoy free treatment in all public health centres and hospitals in the state.

He said, ”Women would never suffer indiscrimination as they would become vital indices in our development calculation. Child and maternal rates shall be reduced and eventually stamped out.

”Agriculture, our mainstay would alive while tourism would add value to Ekiti a state of aesthetic splendour.

The governor also pledged that his administration will introduce a social security scheme for all senior citizens of the state who are 65-year-old and above.

He said, ”I must caution that this would not be smooth-sailing. The road will be rough, the climb is bound to be steep but also represents the history of our people- a history of continuing struggle.

”We owe it a duty to repair the damage that has been done by the injustices visited on us over the past three and half years.”

He explained that the events of the immediate past were not a personal war between him and his predecessor but a compelling call to a crusade for the redemption of the state.

”In the spirit of reconciliation and renewal, we must have the courage and the determination to build bridges across divides and unite in common front,” he stated.

Fayemi dedicated his hard earned victory to those who lost their lives during the elections of 2007 and the re-run of 2009 following the orgy of violence, unleashed on his supporters.

He also commended the roles played by the leadership of the Action Congress both within and outside the state who stood solidly behind him while the legal battle to reclaim his mandate lasted.

Dignitaries on the occasion were governors of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; Edo, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; and Lagos, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.

Others were former governors of Lagos, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Ogun, Chief Segun Osoba; Anambra, Dr. Chris Ngige; Ekiti, Chief Adeniyi Adebayo; Oyo, Chief Lam Adesina, and the chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Chief Bisi Akande.

Also present were; a former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose; former governor of old Ondo State, Mr. Bamidele Olumilua; Mr. Femi Falana, Mr. Tunji Abayomi, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Chief Abiola Ajimobi, Chief Rauf Aregbesola, and Jimi Agbaje, among others.
