FG approves sack of NITEL/M-TEL workers

All the staff of the state-owned telecommunications companies, NITEL and M-Tel will be sacked, as the Federal Government has approved the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on NITEL/M-Tel Labour Restructuring earlier constituted to resolve the 30-month-old crisis.

Already, N51. 6 billion has been proposed to settle the severance package and settle all the entitlements of the workers, whose disengagement from now is a matter of days.

Also, the Federal Government accepted the recommendation that after the sack of all the members of staff of the two companies, critical staff that would facilitate a smooth handover to the new core investor would be immediately re-engaged.

But it was made clear that the wage bill of those to be re-engaged should not exceed 10 per cent of the current wage bill.

Under the proposals approved by the Federal Government, the N51.6 billion is to be applied in settling the exit package due to permanent and casual staff of the companies.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, who is the chairman of the task force, received the union officials behind closed door last week in his office, where he intimated them of the development and the approval of the recommendations of the task force.

He commended them for their patience and expressed government’s acceptance of the recommendations of the task force on the issues.

Another set of people will be added again to already exploded unemployment market. Meanwhile, no matter what anybody will say here, it is better than what OBJ did to Nigerian Airways workers. Even those in the grave will never forgive OBJ for what he did to them, who until date, are yet to get their full benefits. Yet, some idiots will still praise OBJ. ABUJA — THE Federal Government has approved N51.6 billion for the settlement of 30 months salary arrears and exit package due to permanent and casual staff of the embattled Nigeria TeleCommunication Limited, NITEL and its GSM arm, M-tel, raising hope of an early resolution of the wage crisis facing the national outfits.

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, who disclosed this, said with this development, a resolution to the 30 months labour crisis in the two government-owned telecommunication companies, had been reached.

Chief Wogu who is the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on NITEL/M-Tel Labour Restructuring, announced government’s approval of the recommendations of the task force in a meeting with executives of the labour unions in the two companies in his office in Abuja.

Yea, we have been having same, just as it is in the world over, but that of Nigeria is very peculiar because of the rate at which people are losing their jobs. Yesterday, it was Oceanic that downsized; today, it was Ecobank sacking 400, tommorow; NITEL is sacking over 1,000 and next tommorow: it could be Zain changing its name again, and so, another 200 must go. Are we not tired?

Eyah.

At least they will get something.

Getting something, is the only good news about their own disengagement.

How can the govt keep paying them when we all know NITEL has not been functioning for almost a decade now. Those useless people who overcharged and were so rude to customers who wanted to settle bills. Let them get a taste of their medicine.

For those of you screaming unemployment, can you please tell me if NITEL is making money or not.

I believe some of them will be re-absorbed and I want to assume what's on sale are the assets and not the institution as a going concern

Its a good thing their arrears and severance packages will be paid which means collecting like 30months salary in one day. Its a good deal

Who was to be blamed for that? Will govt claim ignorance for the attrocities then in NITEL?

Never mind. Even in the face of high unemployment, GOD is still giving people jobs. Yours will be amongst theirs in JESUS name. The only problem now is that, a lot of them are no longer advertised. it is done based on man-know-man.

Oh my GOD! When shall we ever hear something more positive about this nation?

I am also expecting them to overhaul our various security agencies, employ graduate into our security agencies and make this agencies more of literate personal.
