Africa United is a road movie about five children who travel 3,000 miles from to reach the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the continent – Fabrice, a middle-class football protégé; Dudu, a Rwandan Aids orphan with a true sense of determination; Beatrice, his God-loving and gentle little sister; Celeste, a proud teenage sex worker; and Foreman George, a traumatised former child soldier from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The early screenings have seen rapturous acclaim for the performances, and at the Toronto Film Festival last month it won a standing ovation. "That was an insane moment and a big relief," said director Debs Gardner-Paterson. http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/oct/03/africa-united-film Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaZ07vU7GjI It looks super-cute!

It does look interesting. But equally odd. For a story highlighting typical african youth, why do their backgrounds have to be so stereotypical? aids orphan, child soldier, soccer kid, sex worker etc . . . if it was truly diversity they were going for I think they went the wrong direction. While we do have those problems, the backgrounds of african youth are yet so much more diverse - in a positive sense - than that. It's evidence of trying too hard. Anyways, lemme not judge until I've seen the film. |
