LOCATION: ODU’A INVESTMENT COMPANY MUSEUM, Cocoa House, Dugbe, Ibadan.

Yoruba Hall of Fame. This place involves information about the ‘Yoruba Firsts’- the Yoruba people that were the first to something wonderful in Nigeria and abroad.

1. CHIEF OLUSEGUN OBASANJO (GCFR)

He is the first on the wall. They gave him a name- I have forgotten, but it had to with his antics and comedic abilities. I laughed.
Also, he was the first military Head of State to transfer power peacefully to a civilian regime
He was the first Yoruba two-time ruler of Nigeria
Additionally, he received the instrument of Biafra’s surrender after the Nigerian Civil War. He introduced Operation Feed the Nation.

2. CHIEF MOSHOOD KASHIMAWO OLAWALE ABIOLA (businessman, philanthropist, freedom fighter, politician)

The first person to record the highest vote in a Presidential election in Nigeria. (When he was arrested, many notable people like Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Pope John Paul spoke about him.)

3. MR. TAIWO AKINKUNMI

The first and only designer of the Nigerian National Flag

4. MRS ANIKE AGBAJE-WILLIAMS

The first face and voice on commercial Television/Radio in Africa (first lady of the tube)

5. SIR ADESOJI ADEREMI (1889 – 1980)

Nigerian Political figure and a Foremost Yoruba Traditional Ruler. (This man was simply awesome. you have to read about his prowess to know)

6. DR. OLAKUNLE OLASOPE

The first male to be seen on Television when commercial television became available

7. CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO (GCFR) (Economist, Lawyer, Journalist, Politician)

First Premier of the Defunct Western Region. The first leader in modern era to be referred to as Asiwaju Omo Oodua

8. CHIEF SAMUEL LADOKE AKINTOLA (teacher, politician, lawyer)

Last Premier of the Defunct Western Region. He was assassinated.

9. LAMIDI OLONADE FAKEYE (1928 – 2009)

A foremost Nigerian Carver and an African Artist of modern times

10. CHIEF HUBERT OGUNDE (Actor, Theatre Practitioner, Musician, Theatre Director)

Established the first contemporary theatre group in Nigeria in 1945. Some of his works are: Yoruba Ronu, Otito Koro, etc.

11. MR. RASHIDI YEKINI

Scorer of the Nigeria’s first ever world cup goals
First Nigerian to win CAF footballer of the year

12. IICC SHOOTING STARS

The first Nigerian football club to win an international trophy, the African Winner’s Cup in 1976.

13. MR. NOJIM MAYEGUN (Boxer)

The first Nigerian to win an Olympic Medal

14. TESLIM “THUNDER” BALOGUN

A foremost Nigerian Footballer and the first African to be awarded a coaching certificate

15. PROF. AKINWANDE OLUWOLE SOYINKA (scholar, poet, playwright, dramatist, essayist, activist)

The first African Nobel Laureate in Literature

16. MADAME OLUFUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI (teacher, gender activist, freedom fighter, pace-setter)

The first woman to drive a car and ride a bike on Nigerian road

17. PROF. AYODELE AWOJOBI (erudite scholar, author, activist, inventor)

The first African to be awarded a Doctor of Science Degree by the Imperial College London and youngest Professor at the age of 37.

18. CHIEF (MRS.) OLUFOLAKE SOLANKE

The first female lawyer to be conferred as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)

These are the Yoruba Hall of Famers who did extraordinary things as Nigerians.
