6 Ways To Position Yourself As A Brand Ambassador On Social Media

These tips will definitely be helpful!

You don’t have to be a celebrity like Funke Akindele to become a brand ambassador as you can appropriate your brand ambassador skills on social media.
Several young Nigerians with access to the internet have not mastered the art of forging relevant career paths and making money legitimately with their online presence, particularly on social media.
Over 90 million Nigerians have access to the internet, says Hootsuite, a social media marketing platform, in a 2019 report. Of this number, about 24 million are said to have active social media accounts, but only a handful have used that opportunity to their advantage by monetising their content. Some of those online opportunities that can be explored are talked about in parts here.
One of such opportunities that is rarely explored in this part of the world is positioning oneself for brand ambassadorial roles as an active social media user. There is a misconception that only celebrities in the entertainment industry can be approached by brands for endorsements but here, we’ll discuss how an average social media user can become a brand ambassador without necessarily being a celebrity in music or film.
In becoming a brand ambassador for any company, the opportunity to grow your personal brand is significant, as this can offer many benefits beyond any financial incentives associated with the position. Brand ambassadors stand to gain valuable skills and experience which makes them worth more to employers, especially if you can prove how your contributions helped the company grow.
Here are six tips to position yourself for ambassadorial positions for brands:
1. Create compelling online profile
Create a social media profile that positions you as a respectable personality and someone of interest. Decide on what searches you’d like to appear in and ensure that the right keywords are included in your profile in order to boost your chances of being discovered. Your social media profiles should also have a cohesive feel and be visually appealing.
2. Have interesting personality on social media
Forget the desperate, clout-chasing fluff that is prevalent on social media, and focus on actually providing your followers with quality, interesting and informative content. Be strategic in your approach and never post for the sake of just posting something. Brands will most likely not look your way if they notice inconsistencies in the quality of your posts.
Also, be sure to engage your followers in discussions as much as possible and adopt diplomatic approach on controversial topics. Essentially, you have to keep the engagement on your social media because companies will not be interested in you if they don’t see consistent engagement from your followers.
3. Promote company products for free
Talking about your favorite brand of product(s) on social media has a lot of advantages, particularly if you are able to influence your followers to also use such product(s). Having enough knowledge about such product to be able to provide answers for curious followers will much likely impress the company and make them approach you.
4. Show that you have enough knowledge about the product and company
Brand Ambassadors are energized thought leaders and you must position yourself as one for the industry you’re targeting. As said above, you must demonstrate adequate knowledge about the product or company you choose to talk about and you must be professional about it.
5. Be professional
It is easy to fall into the temptation of jumping on trends and pedestrian topics on social media, but as a potential brand ambassador, you must dissociate yourself from conversations that violate professional boundary. Be polite in expressing your opinion, steer clear of posting anything offensive, ignore trolls and demonstrate that you’re willing to learn from others.
Companies will look out for signs that indicate you will be able to handle aggressive situations as well as disparaging comments calmly and professionally.
6. Network
Finally, ensure that you identify and network with professionals in the industry or company of interest and get them to notice your work. An effective practice is to consistently engage with their content by sharing it with your followers and commenting on posts. These connections can lead to opportunities with the company or another company that takes notice of your skills.
*Side note: This is quite different from just being a ‘social media influencer’.
