1. "Measurable Difference" - Be specific about impact. Using words like significant impact, only tells the recruiter something they cannot prove. Why not go the extra mile to show them what you actually did? You do not have to write an epistle for that.

2. "To whom it may concern " - When writing cover letters. This is an old fashioned way of addressing letters. Instead search for the recruiter's name on the company website or do a Google Search (company name + HR manager/recruiter). If you cannot find it, just use: Dear Recruiter/Hiring Manager).

3. Abbreviation of words. Spell out words in full, don't shorten them and don't use slang.

4. Overused phrases: forward-thinker, self-starter, dynamic professional. It's better you explain your capabilities briefly.

5. Stating success claims without evidence. Always show, don't tell.

6. Outright lies about what apps you can use. This one will always backfire either during interviews or after the person gets the job.

7. Unprofessional email addresses. Upgrade your email address, don't use informal names or names that give a negative branding. Just use your name or initials.

8. Using a generic cover letter. If they find out, your resume may not be reviewed.

9. An inactive social media profile (read: LinkedIn).

10. Absence of job description keywords in your resume.

pls what generic cover letter

A generic cover letter means a cover letter that is found on most cover letter template websites. It is common and popular. Same words, same style and outlook.

It is always better to write your own from scratch, using the job requirements of the role you are applying for.
