The Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta says it has purchased computed tomography scan worth 240 million naira for the scanning every part of the body.

The Medical Director, Prof Musa Olomu while speaking with newsmen in his office on Tuesday said it became imperative to have the CT scan so that the centre can compete with other teaching hospital across the country.

Prof. Olomu explained that the CT scan would perform a lot of radiological investigations on the body, adding that it can scan any part of the body.

He however boasted that the hospital is going to the stage of having facilities better than his counterpart in Lagos and Ibadan.

He said, “One of the things we are doing is to ensure that this place is upgraded into a world class standard and one of the areas that we are focusing on is our radiology department.

“Though, we are not leaving any of the specialties behind. One of the promises is that we will get a CT scan machine into the centre and we thank God that this machine has arrived from United Kindgom, it is fully installed and fully functional.

“It is a 64 sight Ct machine and it can perform a lot of radiological investigations. Aside from the brain investigations, it can scan any part of the body, it is quite functional.

“I think we are one of the centres that would get this type of thing in the whole south western Nigeria in all the tertiary health institution and we thank God for this. The cost is quite enormous; we bought it at the rate of 240 million naira.

“The machine has a lot of added advantages to the medical centre because, our nurses always have to go to Babcock which is about 50 km from here; or LASUTH which is close to 100km from here or Igbobi before we can get this investigations done”.

The Medical Director however said the centre is embarking on partnership with electronic company, Philips so that they can establish Cath lab, among others.

He added, “Philips are ready to partner with us, we have agreed upon quite a lot of things, we have agreed on establishment of a Cath lab. Cath lab has some relationship with the heart, chest”.

Prof. Olomu also disclosed that all plans have been put in place for the establishment of the University of Medicine.

He said, “By the special grace of God, we will get finally this month the university’s law, brief and the master plan.

“The planning and the transition committee will be inaugurated at the end of this month and they will swing into action.

“As at yesterday, some of the investors are still willing to invest $750 million into this project.

“We are not looking back at all, we are adamant on establishing this university, it is something that eroded us some 21 years ago when university of Ibadan teaching hospital was to be establish here.

“We encourage them to come down to FMC, running down LUTH, LASUTH or other teaching hospital, I think they are just putting too much stress on their selves.

“If you approach FMC, we have this equipment that will do this necessary information. We have competent hands because quite a large numbers of our radiology have been well trained”.
