Very likely scenario, but for the 80 arrested so far, there are a possible 8,000 still actively involved in this scam that clean their money through car shipments

From the likes you will notice there are a lot of fraud sympathisers on this forum

A lot on this forum are probably into one kind of scam or another. The whole country is a SCAM. Revolution and reorganization of the country needs to start with each Nigerian. The problem of Nigeria is the people, each and everyone of us. But we take solace in blaming everyone else.

The 80 arrested is a tiny drop in the middle of an Ocean. It will not make a single dent. The number of people using fraud money to buy cars meant for Nigerian market are just too many.

It's very sad to always find minority numbers of my fellow countrymen always in the forefront of criminality, deceit and all what not.
Majority of Nigerians are very hardworking, smart and resilient. My plea is that the rest of the world don't use the antecedent of these few miscreants to judge the entire Nigerian nation. Thank you

Sad for our country but true!! Part of the reasons some cars in our dealership lots in naija are cheap, you tend to wonder if its accidented or flooded. You do a vin check and it checks out fine.

Truth is it won't stop but there would be a huge reduction in such peocees for sometime until new ways are being hacked out by these scammers. I likened this to that of a drug cartel, its not just a number of 1 to 100,they are legion.

The prices of very popular cars on most auction sites in the usa sky rocketed in recent years, the use of stolen cards at auctions made it very easy for fraudulent individuals to target cars that are easy to sell, buying at unfavourable prices at auction and selling for peanuts before or after they arrive the shores of Nigeria.

With the FBI'S big bust recently and copart changing payment policies we should expect a more favorable playing ground for car sales where competition is driven by demand and supply and not the availability of stolen funds .

Cryptocurrency is used more recently to launder fraud money and less use of stolen cards at aunction sites, heck stolen cards is mostly used by the same fraudsters to buy and ship down most of all these iPhones and other Apple devices you see in Nigeria. Did they drop value? No!

What these car dealers do is accept fraud money wired into thier US bank account then pay the fraudster the naira equivalent in naira and do business with the dollar, this does not in any way affect car sales. Demand and supply is what still regulate the car market.

US/China trade war is not a global phenomenon, It only affects both countries economy, it will only affect the world if it was oil so pick a side and let's keep watching the movie. I take side with China.

No wonder, sometimes you think you got a good deal Landing a car in Nigeria for 3M only for you to see same car 2M on Jiji you den begin to wonder, good job FBI

Car importation is about information. Hitting the right deal at the right time before someone hits it. You can easily see a $1000-$3000 ride abroad, clean AF. But someone will snatch it anyway before the day runs out.

There are guys out there sourcing for cars to buy for car dealers in Nigeria. White guys are the ones selling the cars to them most of the time. Distress sales pop up every now and then.

Not everything is fraud. Being streetwise is usually the case most times. Some of the cars were salvage sef needing panel beating

True. But it still does not justify some of the unreasonably high prices some car dealers sell.
It is also true that there are legitimate deals that can be gotten for low prices. Not every cheap deal is scam.

Car sales is also not the only avenue through which these fraudsters launder money. They buy properties, expensive electronics etc.

Quite frankly, it will affect nothing in the price of cars. Out of the 77 nigerians involved only a few of them might be actively involved in cars. Its just like a drop in the ocean for the nigerian car sales space.

Totally agree with you sir, the car sells on auction for 1600 - 22000$ excluding buyer and internet fee, now In Nigeria some even sell for 1.7/1.8M which makes me wonder how manage, I avoid those stupid Toyota’s like plague.
DelTel:

Then you don't understand/comprehend his statement (and Likes garnered).

Let me try rephrase: A lot more than 80 people are involved in scam and using vehicle purchase to launder the proceed, Nigerians and non-Nigerians.
One of the major reason I am reluctant to stock almighty pure-water Corolla 03-07, you will see high auction participation for the vehicle thus sold at ridiculous price, and conversely selling lower than cost price in Naija: scammers only care about quick gratification (launder the stolen funds) not profit.

It is not yet uhuru; vehicle-financed scam, nay fraud won't stop with The 80 arrest. A lot more still needs to be done, most especially by our society.
