That was the business of the day before they went into Palm Oil

This man should shut up, slave trade is the shame of Africa. He should pray for his fore-bearers that God show mercy on them.

Abi o. It is a trending business right now. The governor should caution that man parading as a king. Not worth it.

Shameless king! He lacks diplomacy no matter how little. With his new traditional office, sane leaders are careful with what they vomit.

It isn't even about diplomacy for me; no one should be proud of selling his fellow humans as slaves. I don't expect him to carry the blame but he should have firmly denounced those actions.

Someone that was selling his people to the whites was a honest man? Oh I'm very sure he didn't sell any of his family members to the slave hunters at that time. This is very shameful, and more shameful is when a traditional ruler that is supposed to be angry about slave trade is seen and heard hailing the evil practice of slavery in 1800s.

This King needs to be dethroned ASAP!!!

I just got very angry after reading OP. What those slave traders did was barbaric. It should never be worthy of even the most minute commendation

You can't use the word "NEVER" in this case. That would be a serious blunder.

From a historical point of view there were instances of Europeans landing on African soil to capture slaves by themselves. Matter of fact, the first set of slaves captured by the Portuguese around the 15th century were actually taken by force by the Portuguese themselves. These slaves were mostly from the Berber and negro tribes of the Senegal region. This was actually in the earliest days of the slave trade. It was only after the trade began to take full shape that the Europeans realized that it was better to let their African middlemen friends handle the capturing from them.

So, in this case, you can't say that the Europeans "never landed on our shores to capture anyone..." Cos that's hardly true. At some point, they did the capturing by themselves.

[s]The descendants of the foremost slave merchant in what is today’s Niger Delta region of Nigeria, King Eyo Honesty, have said that they cannot regret the active and frontline role their precursor played in the 1800s in being a big time slave merchant. They said they are rather proud that he played that role since it was what trended at that time. They said they are proud because the man was generally adjudged to be an honest man in his way of life and in business dealing with the white men whereas others were dubious.

One of the descendants, who is now the clan head of the Eyo Honesty dynasty, a massive community in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, His Royal Highness Etubom Eyo Ekpenyong Eyo Honesty II, spoke to our correspondent in his palace. He said that the name Honesty was deliberately given to their patriarch because he persisted in truth and in being genuine in his business dealing with the white partners who came from Europe, particularly the Portuguese and British merchants, to buy palm oil, spices and slaves from Calabar. “We are the fourth generation of Eyo Honesty II.

He was a great man in all meaning of the word. At that time, he had 1000 big boats as well as workers and slaves under him. With the boats, he transported his farm produce and slaves. He was a major force. One thing that was conspicuous about him was his truthfulness and kindness, which endeared him to the white men. “He was a trader, a dealer in palm oil. He could speak a little of the English language, which led to his becoming an interpreter between the white business men and the local people. This made him wealthy and famous.

“Many chiefs of local communities would usually keep their slaves in the custody of Eyo Honesty for the white buyers. Available history says he would keep as many as 2000 slaves, most of them brought from distant places such as today’s Akwa Ibom, south-east states, and even Rivers State. Indigenes of Creek Town were never sold. “Nobody should feel pained or be angry with the Eyo Honesty dynasty over the slave trade; perchance their forebears were affected. We should not be misunderstood when we say we are proud. Slave trade was a major business at that time.

We are proud on one hand because apart from the pain of slave trade, he opened up Creek Town, which is the root of the Efik nation and cradle of Black civilisation. “Our great great grandfather brought Christianity into what is today called the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. He first moved for the abolishment of slave trade when he told the white people that he won’t be continuing anymore but rather asked them to bring their God to Calabar.

Funny how Nigerians are reacting to this when they are fond of mocking black Americans as descendants of slaves.

You dey mind them..Even White people that traded in slavery more never apologized till date..Obama once went to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and never uttered a single apology for the nuclear bombs dropped on those two cities..

Dealing in slavery was the In thing then and we should all move on and stop blaming..An average African would look for someone to blame

If this king has taken time to go the museum in Calabar Tropicana and see the video of slave trade and other artifacts he would not say what he is saying about being proud

Please if you can visit that place in Calabar you would learn to live and let live, love and let love

What you did not realise was that Africans traded slaves as commodities, slave merchants traveled through villages buying slaves and communities voluntarily sold off stuborn kids, barnished witches, spoils from wars and other persons considered to be problems. It was a punitive measure, like life imprisonment or execution.

If you ask me, i think it was way better than the Bini executions

Hahaha, so the fact that he was honest with Oyinbo while selling his negro brothers and sisters is something to be proud of. Oh well, judging by how Oyinbo have come to associate us with dishonesty, it is indeed a proud thing to be renamed "honest" by them.
I talk am, if slave trade start again, our very own brothers go sell us finish. If they can cut up body parts for sale, what will be hard in selling the whole human?
I don't know why Negroes think once they work with Oyinbo, they have arrived.
