This happened at 12:30pm today

Read the report……..

The Chief Medical Director of Irrua Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo state, Prof Sylvanus Okogbeni has been kidnapped by some daredevil kidnappers. Two mobile policemen attached to him were fatally wounded and now in a life threatening state. The incident happened this afternoon at Ramat Park, Ikpoba Hill in Benin city.

According to report, the professor who was on his way to Irrua with his security escort was attacked by some vicious and deadly gunmen who overtook his vehicle and suddenly opened fire. The hoodlums who came with 2 cars, a Lexus jeep and a Toyota Voltron had the Jeep driven by a young female who was said to be the leader of the gang.

Some eye witnesses said ,she gave directive to the men to open fire. Two of the mobile policemen were first brought down before they finally abducted the Chief Medical Director to unknown destination. While the hoodlums were going away with their victim, they allegedly shot sporadically to scare members of the public.

People were said to have ran for their lives to avoid stray bullets. The police has been briefed and efforts are now in place to rescue him unhurt.

According to eyewitness, who spoke to DAILY POST, “we were very surprised when they used another vehicle to block the CMD.

“The doors of the vehicle did not open normally but they have to break the glasses to penetrate, having shot repeatedly at the SUV, which we believe is a bullet-proof.

“They shot two police officers, one died instantly and the man that rushed the other one to the hospital just came back now telling us that, he is also dead.”

Police spokesmen, Chidi Uwanbuzor told our reporter that he was yet to get full details of the incident.

It was gathered that two Assistant Directors of the hospital were abducted last week and were released after payment of ransom.

Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospital Research Institute and Associated Institutions of Nigeria, Irrua branch, Comrade Emmanuel Igiechi, said the union would protest against insecurity in the area.

Comrade Igiechi said the abduction showed that staff of the hospital were being monitored.

“This tells us how serious the security situation has become. It is a very dire situation we are in. The security agencies should strengthen their presence in Irrua and environs.

But as at press time, no contact for ransom has been made from the kidnappers to the family members.
