This is what parents in the diaspora should make their children do.
Do not forget your root. Let them learn the culture and tradition.
In contrary.. Parents in nigeria are busy teaching their kids English language and making our traditional languages go into extinction.
Some yoruba, igbo, hausa and othe tribes born and bred in Nigeria can't even speak the local dialect! It is so bad.
Let the schools teach them English and you speak the local dialect to them when they are home.
I often feel bad for some grandparents that can't communicate with their grandchildren because of barriers in language expression.
We should learn to promote our culture.

Nothing special about people learning their own language

There is nothing special about this.

If you abandon your roots and culture thinking you're American or European because you were born there, the average white person will remind you where you came from.

The home based Nigerians who have refused to teach their children their native language are just naive human beings who believe their own inability to speak good English is because they didn't grow up speaking English at home. It's all about inferiority complex and low IQ.

Nobody will teach you to embrace your roots when you're abroad. Gone are the days of "I wanna" "I gonna".
