WIZKID BIOGRAPHY

Nigerian music superstar, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid and Starboy was on the 16th of July 1990 in Surulere area of Lagos State.

He is from a polygamous home as his father, Alhaji Muniru Olatunji Balogun had three wives and about twelve children. Wizkid father is a Muslim while his mother, Dolapo Jane Balogun is a Pentecostal

Wizkid who usually followed his mother to church every Sunday then started singing at the age of 11.

During a radio interview far back in 2012 with Tim Westwood, The music superstar revealed that while he was still growing up, he usually listened to songs by King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley and they were all his mentors.



Before his Stage name “WiZkid” came to be, He was Lil Prinz until 2006. Before his break in 2009, Wizkid sang in the church choir where he formed a group with his friends called the “Glorious Five”. The group managed to release an album prior to disbanding.

It was at this time, He met the legendary singer and producer “OJB Jezreel”. During his visits to OJB’s PointBeat Studios, he watched then 2 Face Idibia now 2BaBarecord songs for his Grass 2 Grace album.

Wizkid during one of his interviews revealed that Naeto C was among one of the people who mentored and coached him when he was 15 years old.

In 2009, Wizkid inked a record deal with Banky W.’s Empire Mates Entertainment.

WIZKID EDUCATION
Wizkid attended Ijebu Ode Grammar School. In 2009, he dropped out of Lagos State University (LASU) to focus on his music. He later went to Lead City University but dropped out after two years in the university.

WIZKID MUSICAL CAREER JOURNEY
In 2009, Wizkid started the account his debut studio album, Superstar. In 2010, 2 January to be exact, he released “Holla at Your Boy” as the album’s lead single. The melody earned him the Next Rated award at The Headies 2011.

Notwithstanding winning the award, he was given a 2012 Hyundai courtesy of the organizers of the awards. The vehicle’s introduction function occurred at the Silverbird Galleria in Victoria Island.



The music video for the song was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video at the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards. It was additionally selected for Best Afro Pop Video at the 2011 Nigeria Music Video Awards (NMVA).

In April 2010, He released “Tease Me/Bad Guys” as the album’s second single. The music was at first released as a freestyle. “Don’t Dull”, the album’s third single, was released on 6 December 2010. The album was recorded in English and Yoruba.

His first album was released by Empire Mates Entertainment on 12 June 2011. The album incorporates elements of R&B, dancehall, and reggae. Wizkid collaborated with a wide range of music producers, including E-Kelly, Jay Sleek, Shizzi, DJ Klem, Masterkraft, Q-Beats and Samklef.

Superstar earned Best Album of the Year at the 2012 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and was nominated for Album of the Year at The Headies 2012.

Ever since then, his music career has been growing from one level up to another.

Wikid has worked with international artists such as Drake, Beyonce, Trey Songz, Tulisa, Kendrick Lamar, Angel, Chris Brown, and French Montana among others.

Wizkid released his second studio album “Ayo” in 2014. The album superstar such as Femi Kuti, Banky W., Seyi Shay, Phyno, Tyga, Akon and Wale. The album’s production was handled by Sarz, Shizzi, Uhuru, Del B, Dokta Frabz, Maleek Berry, Legendury Beatz and Spellz.

In January 2015, Wizkid released the music video for “Ojuelegba”, a song that highlights the struggles he endured in the early years of his recording career. The official remix to the song features vocals from Drake and Skepta; it premiered on OVO Sound Radio on July 2015.

In 2016, Wizkid became Nigeria’s first artist to emerge on Billboard’s Twitter Last 24 hours chart following his guest feature on Drake’s afrobeat-infused “One Dance” single, which charted at number 21] and on May 12, 2016, the song reached number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, a position it kept for 10 non-consecutive weeks.

The single went on to become an international smash hit, topping the charts in 15 different countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France and Germany. The single thereby became Wizkid’s first number-one single as a featured artist in these territories.

In June 2016, Wizkid released the promotional single “Like This”. The song made its premiere on Drake’s OVO Sound Radio in June 2016. It was produced by Amsterdam-based Ghanaian producer DJ Henry X. Sheldon Pearce of Pitchfork Media described the song as a “frolicking, summery jam that revels in all the work he [Wizkid]’s put in.” Wizkid joined Chris Brown on his “One Hell of a Nite” world tour in May 2016.


WIZKID ENDORSEMENTS
In 2012, Wizkid marked one-year endorsement deal with Pepsi supposedly worth 350,000 U.S dollars. He voyaged to Beirut, Lebanon with Tiwa Savage for a Pepsi business shoot. On 28 May 2013, Premium Times reported that Wizkid marked a one-year deal with MTN Nigeria. Additionally, the news source revealed that Wizkid’s Pepsi contract was recharged for another two years.

On 23 October 2013, BellaNaija reported that Wizkid marked a support bargain with Guinness for the “Guinness World of More” show, which was held at the Eko Convention Center of the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos on 3 November 2013. On 18 June 2015, Pulse reported that Wizkid ditched MTN and marked a ₦128 million arrangement with GLO.
