The Nigerian Senate has faulted a suit from concerned Nigerians and civil society groups seeking to stop it from spending ₦5.5 billion on new luxury cars for principal officers.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, who described the court process as the handiwork work of detractors that is bound to, told reporters in Abuja that:

“It (suit) is an exercise in futility; a complete exercise in futility. Even I as a Senator have not heard anything about that.

“So why will people be relying on rumour and newspaper reports? I wouldn’t know and in any case, if the Senate is going to spend that (amount); if it is budgeted for, then it means it is purely legal.

“So why will the National Assembly be different? Why are they focusing on the National Assembly and not looking at the Executive, Judiciary arms of government? All of these people are entitled to official cars and do use official cars.

“Directors of agencies, even minor officials in agencies use official cars. So why will the National Assembly be different? Why should it be a problem that the National Assembly is entitled to cars, to use official cars?

“Some of the vehicles they bought four years ago were no longer serviceable while others have probably been sold to their users,”

The civil society group’s spokesman Kola Oludare, while speaking with CNN, said:

“They can have official cars but why would they spend such an amount buying cars for 109 Senators when more than half of Nigerians are living in abject poverty”

Currently, there are 109 senators representing all the states in Nigeria. With the price budgeted for the cars, it means each senator will get approximately ₦46 million (₦45.9 million) for the luxury official car/s.

A 2013 study by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) revealed that Nigerian lawmakers pocket the highest salaries in the world, in addition to benefits like housing and car allowances.

Yes they deserve official cars we know but why do they have to budget 46 milli for each senator,
The point of electing you people is to better Nigeria abi?? Then you guys should buy IVM motors now the one that looks like G-wagon or land cruiser atleast you have a choice 46 milli per head and una still get other benefits now
Atleast this way we will know you people really want to boost the economy!!
