FACTS YOU NEED TO NOW ABOUT HEPATITIS
Hepatitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the liver and the liver cells!!!
Your liver produces bile to help you digest food and it also removes toxins from your body. Hepatitis causes inflammation and scarring in the liver, making it hard for the liver to do its job.
It is majorly caused by viral infection. Other possible causes include secondary result of medications, drugs, toxins, and heavy alcohol consumption, and an abnormal immune response to a normal body part also known to be autoimmune diseases.
There are five main types of viral hepatitis, they are:
Hepatitis A (HAV)
Hepatitis B (HBV)
Hepatitis C (HCV)
Hepatitis D (HDV)
Hepatitis E (HEV)
>The first three are the most common ones. Hepatitis B and C are the most common causes of liver cirrhosis and cancer.
>Hepatitis A: is spread mainly through food or drinking water that has been contaminated by an infected person.
>Hepatitis B: is transmitted through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person. It can also be passed on from mother to child during childbirth.
>Hepatitis C: is mainly spread through blood to blood contact. In rare cases it can be transmitted during childbirth
>People may have no symptoms of hepatitis while some other people may develop visible symptoms like skin discolouration, poor appetite, pain around the abdomen, vomiting, diarrhoea.
>Some of the signs and symptoms include (but not limited to) tiredness, dark urine, pale and watery stool, unexpected weight loss, yellow skin, yellow eyes, and typical signs of jaundice.
>Drug use can lead to hepatitis. For you that is keen with self-medication all the time. You better watch it now!!
>Hepatitis, especially C is ten times more infectious than HIV/AIDS. Hepatitis C can also be sexually transmitted but the likelihood of contacting the virus is through sharing needles, blood transfusions and other equipment used in injecting drugs. Even unsterilized tattoo needles can lead to a viral hepatitis infection! Take note!!
>80% of people infected with Hepatitis C do not even know that they have it. This is shocking but true!
>Dirty environments, poor sanitation like dirty bathroom, drinking contaminated water, eating food that is not properly cooked, and under-cooked meat of pigs can expose you to a high level ad risk of contracting hepatitis A and E.
>Hepatitis B is usually transferred for mother to child, hence the major reason why a lot of pregnant women are tested for it. If you are pregnant and have not been tested. Quickly rush to your doctor.
>Chronic hepatitis can lead to liver failure and when that begins to happen, your brain can relapse and that can lead to a condition close to dementia. Also, there may be issues with blood clotting since faulty liver leads to fewer protein which helps to clot bloood

PREVENTION
In general, the careful handling of needles and the screening of blood before transfusion are useful ways to prevent hepatitis. Hepatitis A may be prevented by vaccination and the use of immunoglobin in people who are in close contact with patient of HAV infection.
Hepatitis B has a very potent and effective vaccine, which gives a lifelong protection and requires only intermittent booster doses. Hepatitis B immunoglobulin may also protect or attenuate the severity of illness, if given within seven days of exposure to the HBV.
