Management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, has ordered the immediate proscription of Student Union activities till further notice, Igbere TV reports.

The management also ordered the shut down of the university and academic activities indefinitely, asking the students to vacate their halls of residence.

Igbere TV learned that the order is as a result of Tuesday’s incident that led to the death of a student of the school, in which some cars in the governor's wife convoy were reportedly destroyed.

The latest development was disclosed in a special announcement on Voice 89.9FM Tuesday night, monitored by Igbere TV Ekiti State correspondent, Adeyinka.

“Following the unfortunately incident acted out by some youth in Oye Ekiti earlier today, the management of Federal University Oye-Ekiti hereby announce immediate and indefinite closure of the university to forestall further break down of law and order.

“At the same time, the students’ union of the institution is disbanded indefinitely. Following this closure, the students population is hereby ordered to vacate the university premises no later than 10am tomorrow, 11th of September, 2019”, the announcement read.

A 100-level student of the institution, Oluwaseyi Kehinde, was killed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force during the crisis, Igbere TV recalls.

Several other students were also reportedly injured while they were protesting poor electricity supply on their campuses on Tuesday.

The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, was allegedly attacked during the protest, which led to the police officers attached to her convoy to retaliate.

Eyewitnesses at scene told our correspondent that the actions of the police officers turned the protest bloody, leading to several casualties.
