Today marks 2 years since operation python dance, the infamous and highly unpopular military exercise in the South East of Nigeria against the separatist group called IPOB. In most civilised countries, the military are never called out unless there is a situation that has gone beyond the control of the police or times of national emergency. The traditional role of the military is that external security and territorial integrity, not internal security. Soldiers are trained to kill, that is why they are only used in dire situations. Internal security is the job of the Police.

As at the time, Boko haram was ravaging the NE, Herdsmen were slaughtering all over the NC, Niger Delta militant cultists were killing people in the SS and armed bandits were all over the NW. The South East was one of the few zones that had no armed group. But that is exactly where Buhari decided that military intervention was needed.

IPOB is an unarmed separatist group with little or no history of violence. They are agitating for the SE and some parts of the SS to leave Nigeria according to the international laws of self determination which Nigeria is a signatory to. They want referendum. The UN and AU charters grant's anyone the right to agitate for a separate country

The problem Buhari's regime had was that there was nothing they could pin IPOB down with. IPOB is popular in the SE and are non violent. So Buhari decided to create a problem where non existed by sending in Soldiers, knowing fully well that wherever Nigerian Soldiers go, it wont be long before violence follows.

Soldiers came into Umuahia, capital of Abia state and home town of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. They first invaded the press centre in Umuahia on the 11th of September, beat up journalists and destroyed the place. This was a calculated move to make sure that the press would not monitor what they were about to do next. They now headed for Nnamdi Kanu's house but met resistance from IPOB members who blocked the road to Kanu's house and enquired the mission of the Soldiers there. Infuriated that the IPOB members dared to stop them the Soldiers shot one of the IPOB members in the leg. This caused IPOB to start pelting the Soldiers with stones and sticks, forcing them to withdraw. The Nigerian would later spin this story around and claim that they moving in a "show of force" and were attacked by IPOB with no provocation.

The Army then regrouped and lurched an all out assault on Kanu's home on the 14th of September 2017. They came shooting at everything that moved killing 28 people. Not even Kanu's Dog was spared. Operation python dance then turned to a bloodbath as the Nigerian Army went on a killing spree of unarmed people and a violating people human rights with impunity. IPOB members were tortured, made to lay down in muddy water, beaten, violated and killed.

Having achieved the violence he wanted, Buhari rushed to court, blamed the violence on IPOB and had them declared a terrorist group. The USA, EU and Ohanaeze swiftly reacted by saying that IPOB is not a terrorist group. They wondered how an unarmed group that killed nobody could be declared terrorists when there are other armed groups such Fulani herdsmen who are killing people but were not designated terrorists.

September 14th was indeed a dark day, it was the day that Igbos witnessed state sponsored terrorism by the government of Buhari and it should be condemned by all well meaning people
