As noted in ENHANCING YOUR LEARNING SKILL AND PERFOMANCE OUTPUT, you can learn anything you want to learn. So far you have the right strategy and understands what learning is which we are about to tell you, you can learn anything. From the most complex mathematics formula to the most abstract logical sequence, once you understand your brain well, you will know how to manage it to serve your utmost learning interest.

Apart from the functions of the brain part we have discussed in past posts on the learning machine (your brain), the other thing you need to know about your brain which is important for learning is the brain waves.

An average human being has about 86-100 billion neurons. Each of these neurons can connect to about 20,000 others. You will agree the interconnectedness is massive. The communications between these neurons is why you are able to read this amazing blog post. When one is brain dead, the waves are no longer in sight.

Without ado, brain waves are the tiny currents of electricity sent between the brain neurons. They are called waves because of their cyclic wavelike nature. Brain waves are measured in hertz using the electroencephalograph (EEG).

There are basically four different types of brain waves namely, the Delta wave, the theta waves, the beta waves and the Alpha waves. One of these is the best for learning. Let us explain.

Delta (~0.1 – 4 Hz)

Delta brain waves are the slowest. It is associated with deep, dreamless sleep. The brain actually does the body repairs when the brain is in the the delta wave state. Invariably, learning cannot be done when the brain is in this state.

Theta (~4 – 7 Hz)

Theta waves are faster than Delta waves and they are associated with early stages of sleep and deep meditation. One crucial importance of these brain waves to learning is that memories are processed and stored when our brain are in the theta state. So, little acts like siesta after classes or study and a good night rest are important for knowledge retrieval.

Beta (~13 – 30 Hz)

This is the state we spend most of our lives. It is associated with normal alertness and consciousness. When we are under this state, our brain is constantly changing focus from one thing to another.

The beta state is good for driving or parenting and any other activity you engage in where you will need to focus on different unrelated things. However, for learning, it is not good for your brain to be transmitting this wave. From experience as a teacher, many students learn under this state and it is the reason only few appear to be smart. The real state for learning is that last wave, the Alpha wave.

Alpha (7 – 13)

The Alpha brain waves are the best for any form of learning you want to engage in. the key to faster learning is to get your brain to this state and you catch it in a flip. Many persons do get their brain to the alpha state unconsciously but you can do it consciously and that is what we will teach you.

The alpha state is associated with being awake and alert but relaxed. Our brain functions most effectively under this state. We will be able to focus on one thing and conclude it. Not switching mode as in the Beta state.

In conclusion, your brain is a complex machine and as human you can make it efficient to the highest level possible. At least, to the point your human capability can attain. Knowing how the brain works is indeed necessary for teachers and mature learners who wants to learn themselves. This is what we have done.
