10 Things You Need To Know About "Security Votes".

(1.) Security votes are monies earned by all elected government officials in Nigeria. ( Governors, legislators, Local government Chairmen, Counsellors, etc).

(2.) The security votes are deducted from the state's monthly federal allocations.

(3.) It is said to be the first deduction that governors make when they see their state's "bank alerts". This is, irrespective of whether civil servants salaries are being owed in the state or not.

(4.) The security vote is a monthly affair.

(5.) Security vote is an invention by the military junta. It was originally intended for military administrators to carry out intelligence gathering, to help secure the ruling regime from coups, or to attend to other security challenges.

(6.) The security votes are usually unappropriated. In other words, they are not spent for the purpose for which they were designed for.

(7.) Security votes are never accounted for. In other words, the monies ultimately find their ways into the private pockets of politicians.

(8.) It is not backed by any law.

(9.) It is unconstitutional.

(10.) This is one of the many frauds that the Nigerian system has given legitimacy to.
