Public outcry on N5.5bn SUVs, an insult –Senate

The Senate, on Wednesday, described the public condemnation of its planned purchase of Sport Utility Vehicles amounting to N5.5bn for the senators as an insult.

The Leader of the Senate, Yahaya Abdullahi, stated this in an interview with journalists in his office in Abuja.

Abdullahi said the status of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not undeserving of an SUV.

He said each of the 109 senators in the upper chamber would get one SUV, which would be paid for at the end of their four-year legislative tenure.

He said the burden on the shoulders of the senator was not a mean task and that an SUV for their work was not too much.

The Senate Leader said, “What is the problem there? It is an insult to say that a senator of the Federal Republic cannot ride a jeep in Nigeria. It is an insult. The N5.5bn is from the National Assembly fund and it is budgeted for every year, which they will pay back at the end of the tenure.

“I was a permanent secretary. I know what ministers get; we cannot even compare ourselves to ministers because we are higher than the minister(s). For you to say that a senator of the Federal Republic cannot drive a jeep today — come on, that is an insult.

“Go and tell the people that the work that we do is more than the work of ministers. The weight that is on me today; there is no minister of the Federal Republic that has it.”

Abdullahi said the collapse of the local government areas across the country had placed a burden on senators who “carry loads outside their purview.”

Here we go again.

Lest we forget, the Senator clearly stated that the ordinary 'noise maker' Ministers, who were not even elected, who never went through the rigors of campaign, are enjoying SUVs.

So why should Nigerians make noise about the elected senators, who are superior to the Ministers getting 'ordinary' SUVs

The bottom line is that both the Executive and the Legislators are extremely wasteful and insensitive.
We should condemn both and not scapegoating just an arm like Nigerians did to the 8th Senate.

When you sow wind you reap whirlwind, the executive set up the saraki Senate by selling this unfortunate narrative, now saraki is gone and their rubber stamp assembly is in place but it is now difficult to rein in the monster they created, because it has taken on a life of its own

Ordinary 5.5bn naira for 109 senators to buy cars and the masses are crying. They should be made to pay much more for their foolishness in voting incompetent buffoons into offices meant for respectable and serious minded people. Next time it will be private jets, not just SUVs!

shocked

A case of open corruption in corporate and government blue colar ways, bank go scam us, nepa go scam us , senators go scam us too.. and they have full backing of the law....

Official cars should be attached to the office of the Senator and maintained by the government strictly for official duties only and to be driven by only government drivers, its not to be cheaply auctioned to the Senator for keeps after 4 years..

This is an insult to Nigerians.
This is NOT the change we voted for.

These kids below are the ones that need wardrobe allowance,
And vehicles that will be taking them to and from school.
