Governments and multinational bodies impose economic sanctions to try to alter the strategic decisions of state and nonstate actors that threaten their interests or violate international norms of behavior but the question is do these sanctions produce their desired results?

Iran has been under US sanctions since 1979 revolution and this country was still able to build one of the most powerful militaries in middle east and it is ranked as the 14th most powerful military in the world. As the country's economy continue to receive death blows from the United States the Iranian government isn't showing any sign of capitulation even this economic warfare has emboldened the regime in Iran. As a response to this the country has been scaling back its commitment to the JCPOA deal.

I can say the sanction is pushing the regime towards getting a nuclear weapon.

RUSSIA

After the annexation of Crimea by the Russian federation US and EU countries rolled out series of sanctions on Russia but as usual it emboldened Vladimir Putin by going into Syria to prop up Assad's regime which was met with sanctions too but the government in Russia didn't succumb to all these western sanctions. The world has seen a more assertive Russia.

Venezuela, Cuba, Noth Korea are countries that have shown defiance to US/western sanctions.
When you sanction a country ordinary civilian suffer the effect unlike the political elites who have amassed wealth for themselves

Do sanctions produce their desired result or the opposite?

Sanctions doesn't produce any desired result, the civilians are the ones who suffer and who most of the time barely live a normal life, and don't have any influence on the country's decision making.

In the case of Iran, sanction is more of a blessing than a curse, before the sanctions, Iran depended heavily on America for basically everything, from weapons to aircraft to gadgets to cars to heavy duty machines... just everything were imported. After years of heavy sanctions, they had no option than to look inwardly, today the republic produces almost everything they need and is self-sufficient.

Sanctions are only effective when dealing with a weak government and people, when people are behind their government and know an outsider doesn't mean well for them, they'd rather starve than give in to others demand.

Russia, Iran and Libya have showed that Sanctions don’t really work.
After EU joined USA to sanctioned Russia, Russia also imposed her own Sanctions on EU.
Russia imported almost all Agricultural produces from EU and when Russia imposed her own Sanctions, the EU started feeling it but the EU thought it’s wouldn't last because Russia depends on EU for Agricultural produces a lot.
Then Russia started producing every food items, Russia was importing for years
Russia is now the world exporter of wheat
Poland farmers where protesting against their government because Russia stopped import Polish Apples and Russia started producing her own Apples.

Sanctions clearly doesn't work in nations that know what they're doing

Sanctions only work in African countries like Zimbabwe
