They should please implement this immediately in Abuja.

A lot of empty apartments in the town. Estates that are not being rented, built with stolen funds.

I wonder how house owners are now the problem of poverty in Nigeria. The government failed woefully in making life liveable in Nigeria by their greedy nature in them.

Even if the house become 20k a month many won't afford it when they basic salary is 30k

How will the taxing benefit a common man on the street cos those he-goats in power will still embezzle the money.

Problem of Nigeria is Security, epileptic power supply, bad roads, bad water, bad leaders... Fix that and common man will enjoy that country.

Well, what do I know anyway.

The reason why most houses are empty is because of rural urban migration, people leave there houses in search of greener pastures, if people decide to stay back and occupy there house would government provide for them?

I bet most of yhu didn't read before commenting as usual.

A lot of them didn't. Let me assist to highlight key points.

Evicting slums to make way for uninhabited luxury apartments
No tenure security as one landlord can wake and effect changes and charges.
Wide economic gap.

Fact is Nigeria is sick everywhere.

These are discernable in just 10days, and solution preferred within this time frame.

You have a country where the FG is interested in keeping the poor in perpetual poverty o they can control the narratives and their lives.

Housing is not a privilege it simply fundamental right of every human.

Rent Cap Bill should be re-introduced.
School fess Cap should be introduced for all levels of schooling.

Enough of 99 49 living.

Isn't it always like that? At the end of the day, we are the ones to suffer, never the gov

Way to go!
So far there are still deficits. Meanwhile, those houses are vacant because they plan to offer it at above the reasonable market price.

SouthSouth1914:
The houses are vacant because of the bad economy, taxing vacant houses will make prices skyrocket thereby causing more housing deficits!

We must first realise that we have a problem in this country that spans across all levels of our national life. Then we can start to give solutions!
I disagree
Taxing vacant houses will force its owners to bring down the high rent tag on it for people to rent them

The below might give an insight into your question. I am not saying they don't have a right to place any cost they deem fit on their property, but if they properties are reasonably priced, some middle-class people will not be dragging low priced houses with low-income earners. Just a thought though.

ULSHERLAN:
If you come to VI, there are loads of vacant houses because the prices are high. If this tax is imposed, I'm sure vacant house owners will rather want to put someone in the house paying something rather than leaving the house and still paying tax on it. Wise move if our FG can implement.

She is talking about income inequality here. A situation where we have billionaires who can never spend all the money and many people with nothing. Capital has its flaws and has been abused. Many rich Nigerians are not even doing serious innovative business. Just rent seeking and government privileges. So the use this money and keep building houses to launder the money.

What she suggested is a simple economic policy to shift incentive from launderees who want tho hide money. If implemented, housing prices will start to drop as no one wants to service an empty house. Many unintended positive effect to the poor.

Short sighted? How?

She is not short-sighted anything. She is so on point. Is like some of you are not leaving in Nigeria.May be u r staying abroad,if not so,u wud av known dat wot she is saying is true. I have bin to many cities in Nigeria,de stories abt vacant houses are d same. How can one big politician build like ten houses in one city alone? He only lives in one.De oda 9 r vacant.Like a particular one I saw,de house was like two deckings n occupied a land mass of abt 3 football field.I asked my friend who stays around dat area who de occupant of such a beautiful mansion r.De guy said nobody, apart from dat old man (security guard) dat stays only in security post for some yrs now.Dis r de type of houses de woman said should be taxed. Some av like ten to fifteen cars parked in dem, while odas av only GP tanks all over strategic locations of de house.Probably for stacking money.Dats why de woman said such houses r ida 4 money laundering or 4 parking of cars.
She went further to say dat de money generated from such taxes should be channeled to providing affordable housing for the poor masses. On dis point, she is right also cos we r known for funds misappropriation in dis kon3.

The idea is not impletantable.

I know an estate in Rivers state that is totally empty, why because of security.

The place developed then at a point everybody moved out of the neighborhood, because if they don't rob you in your house, they would ambush you on the road and kidnap u, so you are saying these people who fled there house for there safety should start paying taxes for running for there own safety?

If the government did what they were supposed to do would they run?

All these people abroad just because they have stayed there for long they think the politicians they see abroad spending money and the citizen's are the same, hunger dae for Nigeria seriously o, no dae use oyibo standards dae measure our own o, we are still very backward

EPC. Engineering procurement and construction is one of the sure banker conduits for chopping money.

A lot of these Estates may be constructed solely so that some people can eat money. When the cost of construction is 1 billion, but the actual valuation of facility is 500 million, it simply means the purpose of the project was not housing, but a vehicle to eat money.

That is what the lady is referencing.

There is nothing unusual in her observation. It is a common pattern in countries where there is poverty and corruption.

Vacant houses? In a country where many are homeless. Instead of taxing them why not give it out to homeless citizens?

The idea is to tax the rich more. That is how it is done in reasonable countries. This helps to reduce long throat that has eaten deeply into our lives. One man go get 17 cars because he is not paying tax on them.

One of the major reasons we loot in Nigeria is our greed level and love for material things.

Everyone else has noticed that the hardship and poverty in the country has reached an all time high, only Buhari asslickers don't see it. grin

Great Idea but it still won’t put a roof over the head of the homeless unless the money is reused to build low income housing at a subsidized rate for the poor or even free in some truly desolate areas

Once we do that crime will reduce

I like your reasoning. Even hospital bills should be capped for services rendered. We need to bridge gap between rich and poor. it is only in Nigeria that people see basic social services as 'class' thing. If bills/fees for social services like housing, education and health are capped, there will be redistribution of wealth. That is principe of socialist democracy and liberal economy.
