UEFA has confirmed there will be a third club competition in addition to the current Champions League and Europa League.

According to the body, the name of the third UEFA club competition will be UEFA Europa Conference League and is set to start in 2021.

The new club competition is aimed at giving more clubs in more countries a chance to participate in European football, and offer an alternative platform other than the two above.

This was confirmed on Tuesday by the governing body following a meeting in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana.

This is not the first time the body will oversee three club competitions, having had the Cup Winners Cup, which was only for domestic cup winners.

It was however disbanded in 2001, leaving the Champions League and the then UEFA Cup, which was repackaged as the Europa League.

Only five teams from the top five leagues - England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France - will enter, as opposed to the 15 from those nations that currently take part in the Europa League.

It is expected that the winners of the Carabao Cup in 2020/21, or the side that finishes 6th or 7th in the Premier League will be the Premier League's sole representative in the inaugural competition.

The new competition will have a total of 32 teams drawn from various countries, which will then be grouped into four groups.
