Before Flutterwave came into play, there was no payment system within African states, and this was a significant problem for businesses and individuals alike. Africans living in diaspora also found it hard when trying to send money back home to their loved ones; with expensive fees, and failed or reversed transactions been among just a few problems encountered.

The need to solve this anomaly gave birth to the idea of FLUTTERWAVE.

Flutterwave is an API that lets businesses and individuals process payments across Africa. Simply put, it is a payment processor for African payments. Flutterwave aggregates payment services from several gateways, including mobile money and places them under one platform for ease processing.

Flutterwave was founded by a team of ex-bankers, entrepreneurs, and engineers led by Andela co-founder Iyin Aboyeji in 2016, and is currently active in several African Countries with offices in San Francisco and Lagos.

Flutterwave has quickly become a front-runner in online payments and has processed over 60million successful transactions running into billions of dollars. It’s most notable clients include Uber and Booking.com.

As with other great businesses, Flutterwave offers two unique services/products - BARTER, and RAVE. BARTER is Flutterwave’s primary retail product, and it is a service that enables airtime and bill payments, and also supports local and international transfers, virtual cards as well as merchant payments. The Flutterwave team; in their ingenuity created a mobile app for it through which users can create a virtual wallet to make payments on RAVE. BARTER helps you to send money.

RAVE by Flutterwave, on the other hand, is a service that lets you receive payments locally and internationally without stress, and it is free to set up. RAVE makes it easy for merchants to accept payments by multiple means, either through USSD, cards or bank accounts.

With these two excellent services, Flutterwave has been able to shape and change the way payment processing is viewed in Africa, and also made it a lot easier to send and receive money both locally and internationally.

Despite the giant strides made by Flutterwave in the FinTech sector, it’s still facing a few problems, of which some are internal e.g slow response of it’s customer care service - this still leaves a lot to be desired and could use some fine-tuning to better handle it’s growing customer base’s complaints.

Also, merchant acceptance is still quite low in Africa as online payments is still an uncharted course for most local merchants, with a few even abhorring the idea as they feel much safer handling physical cash. Gaggling government policies in some countries has also worked against Flutterwave’s growth in some instances.

Despite these limitations, to a far greater extent Flutterwave has been a success and it’s core achievements includes - introducing an innovative system to send and receive money, and also created a platform that has successfully changed the outlook of global payment processing worldwide, and brought Nigeria, and by extension, Africa to the purview of the digital economy world.

Flutterwave has a lot of good and mind-blowing features including creating a payment page in 30 seconds that your customers can use to pay for your products, creating an online store in less than 20 minutes where you can list your various products, generating invoices, paying bills, and lots more.
