Sowore: SERAP, 48 CSOs Calls On UN, AU To Caution FG by soloenzo(m): 3:53pm On Sep 27, 2019
Not fewer than 50 Civil Society Organizations have come together to sign an agreement calling for the Intervention of the United Nations and Africa Union for the immediate and unconditional released of the Political Activist and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyole Sowore, who was arrested and detained by the Department of State Security about 56 days ago.

This violates the court order which granted the DSS the right to detain him for 45 days. After the 45 days elapsed, he has however not been released even after a Federal High Court in Abuja ask for his release and served Sowore's lead councel, Femi Falana (SAN) his release permit for about three days now.

Sowore was arrested since 3 August 2019 after calling for a national protest which he tagged #RevolutionNow. Since then, he has been in DSS custody.

Among these Civil Society Organizations who have made their voice heard about this issue are Media Rights Agenda(MRA), Global Voices, Socio-Economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP), and others.

In the words of Mr Ayode Longe, MRA Programme Director said: “It is antithetical to the tenets of democracy to arrest a man who was merely exercising his constitutional right of assembly, association and expression and the height of impunity to continue to detain him even after a court of competent jurisdiction has granted him bail. The DSS must immediately and unconditionally release Sowore.”

The Global Voices represented by Egbunike Nwachukwu said that, “Omoloye Sowore’s continued detention and the charges of treason affirm our position that this trial is merely a criminalisation of political dissent.

“We call on the Nigerian government to honour its own laws and the international treaties it is a signatory to. Sowore should be unconditionally released.”

Commenting on this, the Socio-Economic Rights & Accountability Project (SERAP) through Oluwadare Kolawole said that, “Sowore’s case and several similar cases instigated by state governors make a hideous mockery of Nigeria’s criminal justice systems, rule of law, freedom of expression and media freedom.

He further posited that, “Invoking charges of treasonable felony to unjustifiably or arbitrarily restrict the right to freedom of opinion and expression undermine the essence of the criminal justice system and the rule of law.

The CSOs however, commended and acknowledged the efforts made by SAN, Femi Falana for continuing fighting to secure the publisher and activist's release from DSS detention.

There is a popular proverb that goes thus "He who the gods wants to kill, they first run him mad.."

The Nigerian government and Buhari is already running mad and i see Sowore banking on their errors to give himself a household name in the history of Nigeria.

Buhari will never release Sowore because he has learnt from his mistakes of releasing Nnamdi kanu who only grew bolder after his release... We all know Sowore will fly outta Nigeria and use his media houses to decimate the current administration after his release, this exactly is what Buhari is scared of.

The toothless DSS is waiting for approval from Buhari before they can release Sowore. Femi Falana and other concerned members of the public should kindly go home and wait till Buhari return from his globe-throttling before they can take up the case, or else, we all know they are just wasting their time. Buhari is the new Legislature, Executive and Judiciary in town, it so sad this is what the present administration has reduced Nigeria to.

Guess GEJ was bad but Buhari is worse. Can't answer simple question about youth but can jail Sowore for organising peaceful protest.

Buhari is a despotic leader. He has no reason to be admitted into the UN general assembly.

Someone like him should be barred from attending meetings with Democrats.

The more reason to respect MNK.

How do you expect one with ear problems to hear you properly?
Have he released Dasuki?
Has he released El Zazaki?
Releasing MNK on bail was a mistake he will not want to make again.

To release one with a media house who will also fly to America and start calling for Oduduwa republic?

One Nigeria

Meaning Buhari's madness will soon lead to his doom. He refused the release of Dasuki and El-Zakzaky after a court order but nobody is calling him out over that. Now he wants to do same with Sowore and that is only gonna prove to the outside world the Tyrant he truly is.

I kept saying this.... When they clearly refused to let Dasuki go many cried out and they called us wailers. They tested the microphone on Dasuki followed by El zakazaky now Sowore. This is clear dictatorship and it didn't start today.
BUHARI TILL 2050.
