If 2y(5x-7y) -6y X +6 = 45 find x.

Yesterday I was in the sitting room watching a program called China24 on CCTV NEWS, an electric lamp manufacturer was interviewed together with his workers in his factory. The workers are kids between the ages or 12-18 the most beautiful part of it was that the kids can on their own manufacture some. Now let's come down to Nigeria. Nigerian students are busy searching for "x" while students in the developed countries are manufacturing things for the development of their countries.

In Nigeria, our engineering students spend nearly all their time solving difficult equations and searching for "x". In Nigeria, students will be asked to search for "x" I do smile and ask myself how can we use Algebra and simultaneous equation to boost the economy.

How can we use the located "x" to solve the challenges facing us? In Nigeria, teacher will draw a circle having dots in it on the chalk board and tell the kids "this is an Orange" imagine.

In Nigeria, a teacher will be in the class room using acid to change litmus paper to red on the chalk board. In fact, in Nigeria the best place to mix acid with base is on chalk board.

In Nigeria, a teacher will be in the class teaching rock and it types and expect the students to be able to identify them in real sense how possible? However, the above are some of the reasons why at 50+ as an oil producing country we are still importing tooth-pick and matches. Our brain has been channel to the fact that failure to go to school will end one up as a domestic servant of the educated ones which I seriously disagree with. We can't all be in the class room at the same time and expect us to catch up with the developed countries, it never done; we will keep depending on them with such barbaric idea.

Let those that are willing to go into sport be on the field or track not in class room, Christiano Ronaldo who was formally in Real Madrid FC but currently in Juventus was expelled from school at the age of 14 and today he is a world class footballer.

Those that are willing to create some usefull things in terms of technologies, and I.C.Ts should be fully supported. Bill Gates from U.S.A was a school drop-out but became one of the richest men in the world with what he created called "Software".

Let take those that are good in construction to factories or workshops not class room. Let's take away pen from our engineering students and send them out of class.

Let's take away pen from those that are willing to take hoe, cutlass, hammer, saw, screw driver etc.

Our too much dependent on pen is sending us backward.

To me, spending 5, 6 or more years in tertiary institution is nothing but a total waste of time, 3 years is enough for engineering courses.

12 calender month is enough for food related courses and 3 or 4 years is enough to be a lawyer. Imagine our youth spending 8years of their lives in university and still our Government don't trust on their expertise rather they travel out of the country.

At this juncture, I will like to call on the government at all level to look into this and find a lasting solution to it. Lastly our government should stop sending the talented ones away by sending them abroad for training and failed to establish/provide where they will be discharging what they've learnt or the skills they've acquired upon their arrival.

If we can do this, I believe that few years to come Nigeria will be the greatest country of the world while others will be on the queue at our back.

All Nigerians need to know this, especially the Students. Not all of us are meant to become University professors. So we should think of something we can do very well and establish our God given talents in such aspects.
God bless Nigeria as we are awaiting to celebrate her 59th year of independence.

The truth. cool

it sad that some of you reason this way. The most unfortunate part of it is that go people go about deceiving the upcoming ones into not value what their education. Do you mean is only in Nigeria that teachers/lecturers teach/ ask students to find X? For your information, more than 95% of the physical science (like Engineering that you talked about) text materials used in Nigerian universities are not authored by Africans... Those are still full of Xs and long equations. What can you say about that? Do you know that the same text materials are used in Nigerian universities and else where like MIT, Harvard etc? Do you also realize that there will be practically no scientific invention with out these long and tedious equations? You think is just by going to the work shop wedding metals that a refrigerator cools stuffs? an air condition cools the room? a generator convert chemical energy into heat energy and finally electrical energy? a car engine convert chemical energy to heat and finally mechanical energy that peddles the wheel? All of those involves long and tedious calculations. Do you also realize that there a whole lot of so Nigerian professionals trailblazing after studying the X your are blindly criticizing in our Nigerian universities. am proud of these Nigerian youths. am ready to mention a few of them should you care for, you can then go google what they are doing.

our education system is trash. .here in OAU,we do abstract things alot..
in fact, our EEE and MEE syllabus is d same as MIT..but we cannot convert dis theoretical knowledge into real fact

Thank God for accepting that your syllabus in OAU is same as that of MIT. Some like the op said even think what is obtainable in the Nigerian universities is completely different from any else in the Europeans, Asians etc countries. This clearly shows lack of knowledge. To what you said I must admit that though courses contents and syllables are almost the same, the Nigerian system lack in many aspects which makes it more difficult for the average Nigerian student to apply the theoretical knowledge in class to real life situations. Most times they fail to any identify these concept in real life. The problem here multifaceted, not just the university but that of a system failure. It then takes a whole lot for the Nigerian students to be able to conveniently transfer lecture room knowledge the real life situations, whereas, their counterpart else where readily visualize same in the lecture room. this means that the task of succeeding is more for the Nigerian student. This account for almost all Nigerian that very well succeeds in the Nigerian system go out there to top their counterparts, even from places like MIT. Let's take a look at the engineering you talked about. If am right, the concept of engineering as a whole is about design. It could be the design of structures, engines, engine components, electrical circuit, plants etc. All of these processes requires knowledge of engineering principles and very long and tedious mathematical calculations. As a matter of fact, some engineering calculation problems so tedious human find it difficult to solve. Some are so tedious that it will take a while to solve one, hence, Engineer uses Apps and softwares in solving their problems. But the ill informed, like the op don't understand the application of mathematics in designing and developing those things they uses, hence think the school training should be about going to the work shop learning how to wed or solder this and this to produce a radio.

You nailed it sir.
I think theory, practical, and conceptualization works hand to hand..

OAU faculty of tech is using the same textbooks wit MIT and University of California. infact alot of our lecturers did there masters in top University across Europe. ..When they get back to Nigeria, they realized that they where taught with the same home base syllabus here but the difference is the exposure and the advance courses that was included there...
It is high time we think outside the boxes. we actually need all these calculations and theory but it is too much in our uni.
engineering is just 3years program in India with a solid practical backup and see where they are....
we need maths and calculations. The reason why Chinese technicians produce substandard devices is because they know the practical part but not well grounded in the theoretical aspect. But the Japanese are balanced in all ramifications when it comes to tech. ..
In year 2010,a British lecturer was disqualified during last screening or so(he is a phD from University of Liverpool)because he couldn't answer some theory questions d Dean was asking him)imagine

The man would have change OAU mechanical engineering Dept for good because e is vast in practical. This country needs reorganizing
