Conversion – From Idolatry To True Worship by VLadipo: 5:22pm On Sep 30, 2019
You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship. … But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship him.
John 4:22.23

Conversion – from idolatry to true worship
In biblical times nations had their own gods, whom they worshipped without knowing them. Some were not ignorant of the one true God. Israel, by contrast, enjoyed a great privilege, having been chosen from among them by God Himself as His people. Yet even they turned to other gods occasionally. At Jacob’s well the Lord Jesus made the Samaritan woman’s ignorance concerning worship abundantly clear (John 4). It was not a matter of where or what one worshipped, but whom: the Father.

This was the foundation of Christian worship that would henceforth take place “in spirit and truth”. It indicates that that none but true believers are in a condition to worship, for the character of such worship demands a proper understanding of God’s nature. Through regeneration such have become “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1, 4). Our worship must take account of His holiness, righteousness and grace. Without God-given eternal life this is impossible.

How pleasing was the response of both the man born blind (John 9) and the Samaritan leper (Luke 17) when they realised what blessing they had received and who had fulfilled their need! They duly paid homage to the Lord.

Believers have become “a royal priesthood” to “proclaim the praises of him who called you” (1 Peter 2, 9). Their worship implies communing with the Father on the virtues and work of His beloved Son. This is what the Father seeks. May we not neglect this most important aspect of our Christian life.
