When the Sewing Machine was invented, the efficiency of the clothing industries increased immensely. Also, the sewing machines have improved greatly with speeds increasing, and many variations available in sewing styles. The modern machines look and work in a much more mechanized way compared to the sewing machines of old. Instead of just sewing, they embroider, stitch, attach buttons and many more other activities.

The earlier Sewing Machines used a one thread chain stitch device. The new stitching machine use two threads instead of one and uses what is known as a lock-stitching mechanism. The commercial sewing machines are generally specialized for one type of stitching since they can be optimized. They are designed in a way that the fabric is able to move in and out with ease.

The biggest problem with the chain stitch was it was extremely weak and it was possible to pull it apart with very easily. With the introduction of machines, people started to think that a different and stronger way of sewing could be invented that would only be possible with machine usage. Lock stitch was the answer. In the case of lock-stitch, two different threads are interlocked from both the sides of the material the results is a stitch that can look as if the fabric is stitched from both ends making it much stronger and long-lasting than the original chain stitch.

Other than the movement of the machine, the most crucial movement is that of the material. It is necessary that the fabric moves at the right time so the stitches are made in the right position. The movement is known the feed. A typical feed includes: needle feed; drop feed, puller feed, walking foot, and manual feed, generally, more than one kind of feed is used in a single machine to optimize the operation.

The normal household sewing machine will usually only include the lock stitch. But the machines can be used in several ways, generally by moving the needle differently, which is a function in the machine; fancy stitching is made possible. The simplest form of fancy stitching is a zigzag where the needle needs to execute a pre-set motion unceasingly as the stitching is done normally.
