Commando (1985 film)
How many of you remember the Uber action packed film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger! I think it was a film that defined an era or rather a generation. It represented a marked shift in the Hollywood action sub genre that saw the revolution of a culture that always had a certain glamour for gun toting villians and crime heroes.
Plot:
Retired United States Special Forces Colonel John Matrix is informed by his former superior Major General Franklin Kirby that all the other members of his former unit have been killed by unknown mercenaries. The mercenaries, among them Bennett, an Australian ex-member of Matrix's team fired for excessive violence, attack Matrix's secluded mountain home and kidnap Matrix's young daughter Jenny. While trying to intercept them, Matrix is also overpowered and abducted by the mercenaries. He is taken before their leader, Arius, a South American former dictator who blackmails Matrix into carrying out a political assassination in his home country of Val Verde , where Arius wishes to lead a military coup. Matrix previously led a United States-backed revolution that deposed Arius, who has chosen Matrix to assassinate the new president of Val Verde, as he trusts Matrix implicitly. With Jenny's life on the line, Matrix reluctantly accepts the demand, but not before killing Diaz while refusing to cooperate with "his men".
After boarding a plane to Val Verde, Matrix manages to kill his guard, Henriques, and jumps from the plane just as it is taking off. With approximately 11 hours before the plane is scheduled to land, he sets out after another of Arius' men, Sully. He enlists the aid of an off-duty flight attendant, Cindy, and instructs her to follow Sully to a shopping mall. Cindy first assumes that Matrix is a maniac, but after she sees Sully pull a gun on Matrix in the ensuing fight, she decides to assist him in his endeavor. After a lengthy car chase, Matrix catches up with Sully and drops him off a cliff to his death. Taking a motel key from Sully's jacket, Matrix tracks down and confronts Cooke, a former Green Beret in Arius' employ. He kills Cooke after a lengthy fight and learns where Jenny is being held.
Matrix breaks into a surplus store to equip himself with military weaponry, but is immediately arrested by the police. Cindy helps him escape with a rocket launcher and, after commandeering a seaplane from a nearby marina controlled by Arius, Matrix and Cindy land the plane off the coast of Arius' island hideout. Matrix instructs Cindy to contact General Kirby and then proceeds to Arius' villa, killing the leader as well as his men on the way. Jenny escapes her confinement to the villa's basement, but is captured by Bennett. Matrix tracks them, and after a lengthy fight, finally kills Bennett by impaling him with a steam pipe. Kirby arrives with a military detachment and asks Matrix to rejoin the Special Forces Unit, but Matrix declines and departs the island aboard the seaplane with Jenny and Cindy.

Fun Facts about the Movie Commando
10. Arnold wasn’t the first choice for the lead role.
Nick Nolte was almost selected ahead of him. That might have given us a very different movie indeed.
9. The shopping mall in the film was the same one used in Terminator 2.
After being used for both films the shopping mall was eventually remodeled. It might not be recognizable today.
8. Arnold was very protective of Alyssa Milano on the set.
He made it a point to look out for his younger costar and would even help her with her homework on occasion.
7. They had to use a crane to dangle Sully over the cliff.
When Matrix has Sully hanging over the cliff the director initially wanted Arnold to do this without help. Arnold thought it was too risky so they had to use a crane setup.
6. The cut on Arnold’s forehead in the beginning of the movie was real.
Arnold took his fair share of bumps and bruises in this film but warned the director about ever giving his costar a real knife again.
5. It was surmised that thanks to his training Arnold was the equivalent of a 2nd degree black belt by the end of the film.
Throughout the film he was constantly training and finding new ways to adapt to the role. So by the time it was done he’d gained a fair amount of skill.
4. The film took 45 days to shoot.
That’s not record time but it’s pretty dang quick for a full-length motion picture.
3. The studio execs didn’t want Arnold to talk in the movie at first.
Even at this point his accent was so thick that it was hard to understand him at times. The studio execs toyed with the idea of having him not speak at all, but eventually relented, perhaps thinking that it would be best to at least let him try.
2. Arnold did a lot of his own stunts.
It was extremely difficult to find a stunt double his size so he did a lot of his own stunt work. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and a lot of stitches in the process.
1. Arnold’s body count in this film is 81.
That seems about right for a film with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it. By today’s standards it’s probably still kind of impressive.

More Trivia:
Arius (Dan Hedaya) is said to be a deposed dictator from the country of Val Verde. Val Verde was a fictionalized South/Central American country used by Hollywood from the 1980s to early 1990s to depict a Spanish speaking country similar to Cuba or Nicaragua without encountering diplomatic problems. It is also referenced in the films Predator (1987), Die Hard 2 (1990), and the made for TV movie Supercarrier: Deadly Enemies (Pilot) (1988).
There are 54 stunt performers listed in the credits, 17 more people than the actual cast.
Martial arts expert and fight choreographer Michael M. Vendrell worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger on the film, and, by the end of production, Vendrell estimated that Schwarzenegger had become a second degree black belt.
The cut on Arnold Schwarzenegger's forehead in the beginning of the movie was real.
Rae Dawn Chong's reactions to the motel fight were filmed separately and were completely ad-libbed.
The surplus store where Matrix picks up all the war toys during his night "shopping" was "Surplus City" in Sun Valley, California. A movie addition to the building (on the driveway) allowed for the secret room, where the machine guns and the other fun stuff was hidden. In the 1960's, this company had the largest collection of military surplus 'jeeps' and 'mighty mites' for sale in the US.
Arnold Schwarzenegger can bench press over 450 pounds, but they made the phone booth out of balsa wood anyway.
After filming one scene, Arnold Schwarzenegger told Mark L. Lester to never give Vernon Wells a real knife.
Nick Nolte was the original choice for John Matrix, but Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast instead.
An Army consultant showed Arnold Schwarzenegger the move to quietly kill Henriques.
The shot of Matrix standing on the landing gear of the plane as it races down the runway was shot by constructing the wheel section of a plane and attaching it by hydraulics to the side of a camera truck.
John McTiernan was offered the chance to direct this film, and turned it down. Later, while editing Nomads (1986), his feature debut, he was offered the chance to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger's second film for 20th Century Fox, Predator (1987), which he accepted. He also directed Arnie in Last Action Hero (1993).
