The point you raised is the reason ancient researchers begun quest to find out who was who in Egypt,when they delved too into the finding and they came up with fact as papyrus, pictographs,Royal Tombs,commoners Tombs etc to identify different people who ruled Egypt at different era.

They were unable to decode the Sphinx , I looked it up yesterday, seems even the ancient Egyptians called the sphinx ancient.

But Egyptology is very interesting although it can also be scary and foreboding.
