Following the viral Expose of BBC Africa on Sexual harassment which has led to the suspension of two UNILAG lecturers Dr. Boniface and Samuel Oladipo.
The menace of Sexual Harassment and Sex-for-Marks isn't just new to the Nigerian tertiary institutions.
This has been going on for several decades and it flourishes in both private and public institutions.

Here are a few ways we can address this issue urgently.

SIGNING THE SEXUAL HARASSMENT BILL INTO LAW
The 8th senate assembly passed the "Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Education Institution Prohibition Bill" to prescribe a 5-year jail term for any lecturer, educationist or person in a position of authority in any tertiary institution in Nigeria found guilty.

Unfortunately, the bill was not signed into law.
We are appealing to the Senate to fast-track this bill. This will serve as a deterrent to lecturers who perpetrate such evil acts.

USE OF TECH IN EXAM PROCESS AND GRADING
Students don't have to interface with lecturers to request for remark.
Exam scores can be defended and proven with the use of technology to ensure transparency. we've had numerous cases of students being blackmailed with their exams.
If students can be assured of transparency in their tests and exams, there will be no need to succumb to the pressures of randy lecturers as they have no hold over their victims.

FEEDBACK STRATEGY
All institutions should have an efficient feedback system where students can rate their lecturers based on their performance and other relevant criteria.
The proper authorities in these institutions can use the results to assess lecturer performance and take the necessary steps to make sure the students are receiving the best education.

CONCLUSION
Students have suffered enough from lecturer harassment. Whether sex or money for marks, this madness has to end.
Some students have had to drop out, fail courses, spend extra years in school and some go as far as committing suicide because of harassment by lecturers. We are glad that society is challenging this menace but we plead with the relevant governing bodies and agencies to put necessary measures in place to protect students and save their future.
