The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, shed tears on Thursday as he decries the alarming rate of poverty in the country. According to him, the inequalities in society have caused so much hardship with the poor paying the ultimate sacrifice.

He sobbed as narrated an unfortunate situation where a mother could not save her sick child, despite being close to getting help. Sanusi told the gathering at the event that on that fateful day, the woman had walked to the palace from a children’s hospital located just about 200 metres.

According to him, he heard a very loud scream and asked someone to check what happened while the person who came back with tears in his eyes. The emir said the baby died in the mother’s arms while she was waiting for her turn to ask for money to buy the drug to save her child.

“And how much was this? It was less than five dollars,” an emotional Sanusi said. He added, “This is what happens every day in this country. Children die because their parents cannot afford five dollars, that a mother will watch her child die because she does not have five dollars.”

Abeg direct this your lamentation to the core northern past/present rulers and fellow elites who ruled Nigeria as their fiefdom yet have never bettered the lot of the region or nation.

The pervading abject poverty, uncontrolled birthrate/ polygamy, stark ignorance/illiteracy, religious radicalism and oppression that are the problems of core northern Nigeria must be addressed.

Sad sad situation. But what are the chances such will not happen again? 5$ is almost 2k but we hear of policemen wasting breadwinners over #50.
We will be living in denial if we refuse to acknowledge the pathetic situation we're in, and how quickly it needs to be remedied by a genuine change. Do we have the will?Nope. Dry your eyes...go back to your palace

And you sir is also part of the problem. Emir Sanusi is not the Governor, traditional rulers in Nigeria have little or no powers, ordinary local government chairman is more powerful than a traditional ruler.

Emir Sanusi was almost removed from office by Ganduje because of his speaking out against the political rulers. Have you forgotten that he was removed as CBN governor for daring to ask Jonathan to account for our oil earnings.

Sanusi is helping the poor he can, if you too help one or two poor people with food, cloths, medicine and education, Nigeria will be a slightly better place.

Same thing too with your Igwe, Obi or Oba. If the kanu Emirates is meaningless to you, it is meaningful to the Kano indigenes. What of your own kingdom or traditional stool, is it also meaningless?

That's the Nigerian law, it's not peculiar to Sanusi. Some people prefer upholding and maintenance of traditional institutions to riches. Have you ever wondered how much it costs the British royal family? Meanwhile, there are millions of homeless people in the same Britain.
