Border Closure: Will Smugglers Resort To Building Vast Tunnels? by grandstar(m): 11:56pm On Oct 10, 2019
Now with the borders with Benin and Niger Republic closed, ruining business for smugglers, will they resort to building tunnels?

This is what is used in the Gaza strip to ferry stuff from Egypt into it.

If border security is going to remain very tight, will the smugglers resort to tunnels? It may change the face of things smuggled in.

Cars will certainly be out but rice can still go through only this time, labourers will be needed to ferry it across in wheelbarrows and on their backs. Also, new goods will probably enter the mix.

Hundreds of tunnels may be built, making it either unmanageable by customs or a new source of sleaze for them.

What's your take on this? Probable or unprobable? Man must eat!

Even if underground tunnels are dug just to smuggle goods to Nigeria it would be a peanut compared to what crosses the Nigerian border on a fail basis.

You do have a point.

Note however, that there can be hundreds of tunnels. Rather than trailers or cars crossing the borders, it will now be thousands of labourers doing the same job. Who knows, they may even build a small rail track like the ones used in underground gold mining to ferry goods.

I also mentioned that the nature of what is being smuggled in may change.

Anyway, I was just thinking out loud.
