The sudden increase in price may not be the result of a supply shortage but may also be because demand for local rice has shot up. In fact, given the amount the price has increased I think the increase is more a result of increased demand than a supply shortage. All the people that were eating foreign rice are now forced to buy local increasing demand. A country does not have to be food independent to be successful. There are a lot of rich countries that import their food needs. That being said improving farming is a great way to not only reduce poverty but also to help improvised agricultural zones which in Nigeria's case is the north. Bolstering rice self sufficiency will help reduce northern poverty and will make Nigeria more capable in meeting it's local food needs. Overall a good move but why does the govt only plan for the north? 2 Likes |

seguno2: I'm sad that this is the case. Additionally I feel that the govt should provide subsidies to bring the price of rice down and to destone local rice until both these issues are resolved. 1 Like |

Racoon: Actually, it's an opportunity to see how far their policies have been and where to improve on. Politics aside, we really need to be self sufficient in food production, it will create millions of jobs to millions of young people. |

Of course, that's the whole idea as this will encourage local food production. If Nigerians do not take advantage of this then they have themselves to blame. |

If they think the rice is not coming in then the Federal government must be one hell of a joke. Smuggling can't be stopped by closing borders. |

tiredoflife: The increased price will encourage people to go into rice farming. It will take at least 6-7 months, but I think it's too late to start planting rice now. I hope we have enough harvest this season to make up for the shortfall. Of course, people can turn to other foods in the meantime: yam is there... cassava is there... maize and other grains are there. A country of citizens who don't want to suffer - even temporarily - for a greater good is very baffling to me. 1 Like |

FarahAideed: Re: The Automated Coscharis Rice Mill, Igbariam, Anambra State FarahAideed: So, who is growing the local rice people are buying and eating all over Nigeria? Ghost farmers? Enemy of Nigeria. PMB gave coscharis billions to established rice farm and rice mill, people like you were shouting igbo amaka all over the place and you as usual abused and insulted the rest of Nigeria even though the funds that built the farm came from the rest of Nigeria and PMB's good wisdom. So, have they chased coscharis away from his farm too? There's got to be more to you than hatred, tribalism and bitterness. 2 Likes |
