The sudden increase in price may not be the result of a supply shortage but may also be because demand for local rice has shot up. In fact, given the amount the price has increased I think the increase is more a result of increased demand than a supply shortage. All the people that were eating foreign rice are now forced to buy local increasing demand.

A country does not have to be food independent to be successful. There are a lot of rich countries that import their food needs. That being said improving farming is a great way to not only reduce poverty but also to help improvised agricultural zones which in Nigeria's case is the north. Bolstering rice self sufficiency will help reduce northern poverty and will make Nigeria more capable in meeting it's local food needs. Overall a good move but why does the govt only plan for the north?

Buhari govt said it has achieved self sufficiency in rice production just the way they said they have defeated Boko Haram.

Necessity as they say is the mother of invention. The recent closure of the broader will make Nigerians go into large scale and mechanized farming to cash in on the high cost of these products.
This will eventually bring the price down and make them available. I support closure of the boarder.
Wrong! Some farmers may increase their output slightly but hardly will we see any real changes.

I'm sad that this is the case. Additionally I feel that the govt should provide subsidies to bring the price of rice down and to destone local rice until both these issues are resolved.

Can you kindly help with the reference to the new paper that published it that the government said it that Nigeria is already self sufficient in rice production. The best decision ever make in the century is the closure of the borders

If you want to be sure of eating rice this Christmas, you better buy now and store it somewhere. Rice might not even be available in the market anymore by December.
must we eat rice?

Actually, it's an opportunity to see how far their policies have been and where to improve on. Politics aside, we really need to be self sufficient in food production, it will create millions of jobs to millions of young people.

Paid think tanks and propagandists everwhere.Nigeria isnt opening her borders to rice ever.Deal with it.

And yes we will achieve self sufficiency in the rice value chain so long we keep the naysayer parasites away

PS borders must remain closed to rice at christmas

thought that this was the Government's point in the first place. Nigeria isn’t self sufficient because of reliance on importation and cross border importation of goods. Govt closed borders in order to force Nigerians to produce the relevant products for which Nigeria relied upon the neighbouring Nations that imported these items from abroad, circumventing Nigeria’s drive for self-reliance

So rice will be produced so fast now
In how many days will u plant and grow the rice needed for the whole country
Since to u this closure will force us to produce what we need so fast
Re: 'Border Closure Exposes Nigeria's Deficiency In Local Rice Production' by ajl: 9:25pm On Oct 12, 2019
Of course, that's the whole idea as this will encourage local food production. If Nigerians do not take advantage of this then they have themselves to blame.

What right do you have to exist on the face of this earth if you cannot grow your own food, in a land without snow or ice and with sunlight 365-days a year. Or you are benefiting to the import of food. Do I see greed?

If they think the rice is not coming in then the Federal government must be one hell of a joke.

Smuggling can't be stopped by closing borders.

The increased price will encourage people to go into rice farming. It will take at least 6-7 months, but I think it's too late to start planting rice now. I hope we have enough harvest this season to make up for the shortfall.

Of course, people can turn to other foods in the meantime: yam is there... cassava is there... maize and other grains are there. A country of citizens who don't want to suffer - even temporarily - for a greater good is very baffling to me.

My brother closure of border won't stop smuggling of Rice or other contraband.

The FG should look at other options.

So, who is growing the local rice people are buying and eating all over Nigeria? Ghost farmers?

Enemy of Nigeria.

PMB gave coscharis billions to established rice farm and rice mill, people like you were shouting igbo amaka all over the place and you as usual abused and insulted the rest of Nigeria even though the funds that built the farm came from the rest of Nigeria and PMB's good wisdom.

So, have they chased coscharis away from his farm too?

There's got to be more to you than hatred, tribalism and bitterness.

what is the plann of the government for its people and agriculture in the country?not I support this and that policies so that can sound economically politically correct, before u embark on any policy u must look at a way of cushioning the effect, which obviously this government doesn't have have any plann for agriculture

CBN approves N15.7b for additional rice mills

Emefiele while commending Cocharis Farms, said: ”We started this with him, almost about two years ago when we granted him a N2 billion Commercial Agricultural Credit Scheme (CACS). With his own resources, he added to it and that is why he is where he is today.
