The specific responsibilities of the Project Manager may vary depending on the industry, the company size, the company maturity, and the company culture. However, there are some responsibilities that are common to all Project Managers. They are:
1. Prepare the preliminary budget,
2. Establish the time frames of the project’s phases
3. Select the team members,
4. Establish and manage a relationship with the client and all relevant stakeholders
5. Ensure that the resources that the project requires are readily available and are allocated properly.
6. Develop a detailed project plan to track progress.
7. Develop project scopes and objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility
8. Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget.
9. Measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools and techniques
10. Perform risk management to minimize project risks
11. Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation
12. Use appropriate verification techniques to manage changes in project scope, schedule and costs
However, there are other formal responsibilities set out for the management of projects using PRINCE2 methodology and Project Management Professional standards that entails the project manager to interface between the project and the business area. This is important for communicating and encouraging the need for transformation and change within the business area in tandem with the delivery of new capabilities from the project.
It is also important to note that the Project Manager is accountable for ensuring that everyone on the team knows and executes his or her role, feels empowered and supported in the role, knows the roles of the other team members and acts upon the belief that those roles will be performed.
