Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by Nobody: 8:13pm On Nov 09, 2010 |
Polygamy is a case in Yorubaland and most women are begining to open their eyes. When a man marries a woman and yrs later, brings another woman as his "other" wife, it causes friction in the home. Which leads to divorce cases in Yorubaland. YORUBA WOMEN. . . . . WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. DO NOT ALLOW A MAN TO MAKE YOU HIS IYALE. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF, DON'T DEPEND ON A MAN. DEPENDING ON A MAN FOR FINANCIAL NEEDS IS THE FIRST STEP TO YOUR RUIN. On polygamy, our data reveal that 141 (74.6%) women were in a If a man can disrespectfully bring home another woman without your consent, does he deserve to be your husband? Yes, some reported that their polygamous marriage is successful, but how often are they successful? |

It may be better to advise Yoruba women to up the ante in education first. When education is there, poverty will go through the window and they will be more independent. |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by Nobody: 11:12pm On Nov 09, 2010 |
Aloy+Emeka: Don't be stu pid. It's obvious that Yoruba women dont play with their education. If you're uneducated, it's your problem. And lack of education is not the only cause of polygamy. |

Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by asha80(m): 11:31pm On Nov 09, 2010 |
i do not think a lot of yoruba women see polygamy as something bad.You see highly educcated yoruba women becoming 2 and 3 wives of various rich men and otunbas. |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by Nobody: 11:39pm On Nov 09, 2010 |
asha 80:My point exactly. Yoruba women are highly educated, so education has nothing to do with polygamy. For some women who do see it as a problem have ended up divorcing their husband. This plays a key role in divorce cases in YL. And for those who see it as a problem, I suggest they keep divorcing. Why sit around and let your husband marry 3 wives after you? |

Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by AloyEmeka5: 12:43am On Nov 10, 2010 |
Ileke-IdI: Yoruba women are highly educated compared to what ethnic group in Southern Nigeria?. Highly educated is relative and in Southern Nigeria, Yoruba women are the least educated and that may be why they still allow polygamy to thrive. Religion is also a factor, muslim Yoruba women do not see anything wrong with polygamy. You say that education has nothing to do with polygamy, well you are an oaf because you should have figured out that education is the common denominator to better living standard and when the women are uneducated in drones, their standard of living is very poor. Look at Yoruba men staying highly educated and uptight; why can't the women enslave themselves for Yoruba men since they have the wherewithal to do so and have more advanced psyche due to education. Please grow up and accept the truth. And FYI: when you talk about illiterate Yoruba women, Ekiti women are number 1. |

asha 80: Lol true. But not for all cases. Would it be too farfetched to claim that 95% of nigeria's problem starts with money? |

Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by oludashmi(f): 11:07am On Nov 10, 2010 |
In ascertaining this polygamous issue, the first thing you should have in mind is that Yorubas are predominantly muslims due to the arrival of the Arabians before the Europeans. You know that Islam permits it whether educated, semi-educated or illiterate for a man to marry as many as long as he can take care of them. . . although you will find polygamy in christian homes but they are very rare. Also, it is easier to nail it that Yorubas are polygamous cos their muslims are in no way different from their christians, they behave like christians, such that you dont know who is who (unlike the northern muslims) and if invited for a ceremony in the church they will come. Finally, this is the computer age, polygamy is fast rolling off. Many children (even muslims) from polygamous homes vows never to go into it cos of their experiences, exposure and even the monogamy family is suffering in the present economic situation in the country. 1 Like |

^^^ polygamy in Yorubaland may seem to be waning away in urban centres(though taking new forms like having series of 'mistresses', which is not fading away any time soon). In the hinterland, the level of polygamy still maintains a status quo. |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by Nobody: 12:38pm On Nov 10, 2010 |

@ Ileke-IdI Are you Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland or Polygamy ? Because they are two different issues. As for polygamy most Yoruba women especially the EDUCATED ONES ARE VERY MATERIALISTIC . They neglect single men withing their age bracket and run after rich married men(ARISTOS) irrespective of his religion but for his wealth. How can you now blame the men for polygamy when the women willingly run after them for their riches. |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by Bukittes(f): 1:05pm On Nov 10, 2010 |
Thread isn't focused. Are we discussing polygamy or divorces in Yoruba land? If we are discussing polygamy then you all know that the yorubas are not as in to it more than the hausas so what are we talking about here? If we are discussing divorce cases in yorubaland then most of the divorces are caused because the woman cannot do with polygamy and rightly so too. So poster do tell us what we are discussing here, if its polygamy, then lets go towards the North y'all!!!!!!1 |

Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by Ayowumie(m): 3:37pm On Nov 10, 2010 |
oludashmi: oludashmi:POINT OF CORRECTION: Yorubas are not predominantly muslims and as at this moment, there is no available record backing your preposition. The Yoruba society is plural in structure and factors that influence major decisions in their culture are inherent in their traditions. Religion among the Yorubas is tripartite. In explaining religion among the Yorubas, scholars usually use a term called "trinity" - a Yoruba man could either be a christian or muslim and at the same will not loose sight of his traditional religion. Many (subjective and not enof to generalise) muslim Yorubas have been found to be fond of going to church on December 31st while some Yoruba christians involve themselves in fasting during Ramaddan. A typical Yoruba believes that 'God is every where and in every religion' and there is a popular saying that 'olorun ko ko aajo" In conclusion, it has been argued that although Yorubas are religious, many of them usually find succour in their traditional religion than in both Islam and or Christianity. guddsid:Polygamy is not all about the educational level of the lady. Many at times, ladies are unable to help the situation and moreover, the culture that Yoruba women find themselves doesnt encourage divorce. Divorce is seen more or less as a tabboo. Any woman that packed out of her husband house is called "oni le mosu" - it is a derogatory term. Your assertion that a woman would go for a rich man,is unfounded and is not limited to Yoruba women alone. This is a general trend among women. And, most women would see marrying a rich man as an opportunity for financial empowerment as against wat u called "getting out of poverty". Since you can't say that every Yoruba woman is poor and neither can say that all women are poor. |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by AloyEmeka5: 4:13pm On Nov 10, 2010 |
oludashmi: Simply because you are muslim doesn't mean that Yorubas are predominantly muslims. First, you do not have any data to back your claim up and secondly, Ekiti, Ondo and western osun [to a greater extent] are predominantly Christians from my rough estimate. Ogun and Lagos states are evenly distributed; Oyo and Kwara probably have more muslims than Christians. Is that your definition of predominance? |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by AloyEmeka5: 4:23pm On Nov 10, 2010 |
Ayowumie: The culture doesn't discourage polygamy either. That's why you will find Yoruba women who are educated and financially independent, yet they yearn for a man who already have 3 wives and wouldn't have any problem being the 4th best. Unlike in the eastern societies where the greater part of their culture is tailored around their faith. A young and "uptite" Igbo or Ijaw girl getting married to a man as his 2nd or whatever wife is looked down on and in many cases, her family snubs the marriage. I am a great custodian of culture but not a retrogressive one. We were not born with culture, someone along our lineage invented it and if and when that culture becomes burdensome, I believe it should be let go. You see the new culture of FaceBook among our people today, it is already becoming burdensome to marriages, families, employers, etc. There should be a time when someone will stand up and say enough is enough. Same is applicable to polygamy: The poverty rate in Yorubaland today is only 2nd to Northerners and the common culture predominant between these two ethnic groups is polygamy. I keep saying it that it beats me on why someone should support a culture that encourages a man who earns 100k/month for example to marry 4 women who earn less than N100k/month[alltogether, because they are rarely educated] and breed 22 children with these women. How do you expect those children to develop properly when they live on less than $1/day? |

Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by ijeommaa(f): 4:39pm On Nov 10, 2010 |
Polygamy is a way of life for the Yorubas. The young and highly educated ones, do not hesitate to marry someones husband. Thier men can hardly stay with on wife, I tire. |
Re: Investigating Divorce Cases In Yorubaland. by AloyEmeka5: 4:52pm On Nov 10, 2010 |
ijeommaa: If your husband left you for a Yoruba woman, deal with it. It is not our problem . Polygamy is not a way of life for Yorubas rather, some Yorubas still enjoy it. It doesn't mean there are no polygamists among the Igbo, Ijaw, Efik, etc if you must know but there's is waning by the day while polygamy still refuse to wane proportionately in Yorubaland. |
