Local Governments New Revenue Drive: The Lagos Experience. by chinedu234(m): 1:16pm On Oct 23, 2019
It is no longer in doubt that Nigeria is cash strapped. The economy is severely challenged and the government itself is battling to survive. This puts the common man in a very precarious situation. The once regulated local government revenue drive undertaken by the Joint Tax Board (JTB) seems to have evaporated under the current desperate measures by the federal and state governments to sustain the usual opulent lifestyles of officials and godfathers. On the federal highways from Onitsha to Lagos, ninth mile to Abuja,Jos etc,the same story abound. Local governments officials and touts line up especially at very bad portions of the roads to forcefully request for various emblems and stickers from trucks and buses. You can never have all the certificates they request from you because they come out with coinages that do not exist anywhere else. Today 23/10/2019, local government officials and thugs operating all around Ikotun,Abaranje,Egbe,Idimu,Ejigbo have been arresting trucks for not having ON and OFF permit and Garage permit. The intimidated drivers and companies are being taken to local council offices and made to cough out about #12,000. The touts claim that the permits are obtained for #5,000 and #4,500 respectively. The extra is the penalty for not knowing about the new certificates. One really wonders if these are the ingredients of the fuel required for the take off of the next level jet. A reminder is necessary here for those who don't understand the transient nature of power that the mandate, security protection and all other freebies they enjoy today as government functionaries will not last forever. Alex Baddeh should be on peoples minds.
