An important question. After all, we are on the religion thread and it seems that we have taken the concept "religion" (and how vastly profound it is) for granted.

What should suffice for a belief to become religion ?

Is religion opposed to reason ? Or is it based solely on faith ?

Religion can be defined broadly as:

"a cause, a principle or an activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion" -- The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language

As e36991 has rightly implied, the only real religion is Christianity, and if you want a yardstick to measure what qualifies as a religion you will have to use Christianity as the template.

For a belief to qualify as a religion it will have to give explanation to: a holy book, the origin of everything, the origin of death and suffering; the reason why humans are here; the future of humans and the future of the universe.

-DEFINITION-Religion is an expression of faith and belief; the conscious and subconscious response to the ultimate source of existence. This source of existence refers to God in whichever name or language,
