Nigeria/benin Border Closure Big Blow To Regional Integration – Ghanaian Preside by zakim(m): 7:14am On Oct 30, 2019
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday described the closure of the land border between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin was a big blow to regional integration. Commenting for the first time since the Nigerian government closed its border with the Republic of Benin on August 20, Akufo-Addo said the move could negatively affect the regional integration agenda.

Akufo-Addo, at a meeting with a delegation from the First Bank of Nigeria at the Jubilee House in Accra, said: “We are about to enter a delicate period in the ECOWAS journey looking ahead of the possibility of a single currency and trying to forge greater integration among our economies and at the same time have important security and other issues which confront us.

“We have this business of the closure of the Benin Border, which seems to some people to be a big blow to the ECOWAS project”. Akufo-Addo argued that overall interest of member states should override individual national interest. “I believe that there are other considerations that we have to look at and examine to find a way so that we can live in this region in harmony and allow each one of us our national ambition to be fulfilled,” he added.

The chairman of the First Bank of Nigeria, Chief Oba Otudeko, affirmed that Akufo-Addo’s government’s economic policies, particularly banking reforms, had made the Ghanaian economy resilient.

It took you too long to make this complain. Nigeria has an analog president who doesn't understand anything shot of a FIAT like the nation is an aristocratic empire subject to his whims and desire without any debate of alternative measures

The border closure contravenes ECOWAS policy that permits the free flow of goods and people. If rice smuggling is what the border is been closed for, what about other legitimate businesses like shirt sellers, meat sellers and other commodity sellers that travel across the country to get their wares for sale.

Modern day macro economic principles advocates alternatives and multiple operational concepts for getting things done and picking the best available option, but border closure is so 1984 and does harm to Nigeria and other nation's economy.

To boost the economy goes well beyond border closure. Are there incentives to develop local ibdustries that goes side by side the border closure for example? Try applying for a federal government assisted grant/loan and see how frustrating the process is. And that one or two persons gets it doesn't make it the norm. Till what is exclusive becomes available to all, no through economic advantage can ever be derived from federal government assisted projects

The sum of the issue is the CBN governor has reduced to a stoogee, the ministers have become very very wicked with zero-people friendly policies, from increment in electricity tarruff that has escalated over 300% in the past five years, to the return of toll gates, to the increase in tax, to redundancy in infrastructural developments, to multiple taxation issues, to stamp duties. There are very little people-oriented incentives placed in place by this administration.

From senators huge pay. Lack of transparency in the financial reports of the presidential clique. Its all over everywhere, anarchy, autocracy, to trying to control the social media. Men who put heavy burden upon people but won't lift a finger to bear the same burden

One of the last projects that were institutited before this administration was the establishment of millions of tons of silos across five northern states, the massive availability of tractors and farm machinery, rice processing facilities grants, to this current administration that kicked off with the president heading to Kebbi and co distributing 6 billion to rice farmers immediately he took office , if all of these and more has been in place then the development of the local industry. Sad to say other business persons will have to choke and die from the fist approach to trying to develop rice industry or unless there are alternative reasons.

Recently Stallion, Dangote, Coscharis have all agreed to come together to setup 30,000 tons rice processing mills. Why not wait for this and previously licensed companies to commence or resume or improve capabilities. This administration continues its militarialistic approach to force its way through anything without considering effects of its decision

Open market policies continues to improve any economy/industry. Or we want to create more monopolistic industries like we did with cement, sugar and salt.

By the way, you all use ECOWAS passports. grin

This id a typical example of the fencing during my secondary school days. All the students will labour to build a fence they actually know they will break.

The neigbouring countries can do well to be silent and allow Nigerians do the "fence-break". It is not yet time. Their comments on the border closure only make our government to puff. In reality, the reverse holds.

It is just a matter of time if only they can keep quiet.

The borders remains close, no amount of blackmail would make the government to open it. Legitimate business owners should use the seaport to convey their products

How does closing the border improve the general economy of this Nation for heaven's sake?
Funding for Education not encouraging, health worse, security is nothing to write home about, every infrastructure that needs funding is in comatose. This was the same Buhari that chased ghanians away in the 80s. Every where he goes, impoverishment hunger and famine follows. The senators are still balling hard with the gigantic amount paid to them for a job not worked for. Money for fixing infrastructure is nothing to write home about.we want to stop importation of rice but still import fuel. Nigerias needs to open up not close up. This is not North Korea or Iran. Nigeria is just getting useless by the day.
