The government of Vietnam on Tuesday, October 29, appealed to the Nigerian government to allow its country to import rice into Nigeria.
The appeal was made on behalf of the Vietnamese government by its deputy prime minister, Vuong Dinh Hue. Hue made the call when he led a delegation to the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress
(APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. He said if their request is granted, Vietnam would import the commodity at discounted rates. He also hinted that the delegation would also meet Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to present similar demands. Responding, Comrade Oshiomhole said Nigeria would not accept such demand from Vietnam. He, however, advised the country to rather secure land and invest in rice production in the country, adding that Nigeria would no longer become a dumping ground for unwanted chemicals and spoilt products among others. According to him, Nigeria’s borders would remain closed until neighbouring countries learn to respect the rule of fair trade. Oshiomhole also advised the delegation to focus on the defunct textile industry in the country. His words: “Vietnam has a strong textile industry and you have an international market. “I am particularly keen on this because I work in the textile factory before and I think that there are one or two things we can learn from your experience because we are on the verge of reviving our textile industry which will help us create jobs.” He commended the Vietnamese government for backing Nigeria in its bid for the presidency of the United Nations, adding that the two nations will continue to deepen its relationship in the area of trade and investment for the benefit of the two countries.
Since the border closure, Nations who are into direct business with Nigeria have groaned out their displeasure due to the difficulties their countries are experiencing from the impact of Nigeria's closed borders. Countries like Ghana, Benin, Thailand have all come out to complain due to the economic impact the border closure has had in their country, just last week a major company into the production of Alomo bitters In Ghana decried the economic impact the border closure is having on its business, They revealed that they have lost more than a million dollars since Nigeria shut down it's borders.
