Kendra Uchechukwu Onyeabor was a promising child; a Primary 2 pupil who had a bright future ahead of her. Just like every other child, she dreamt of a successful life. The dream was terribly and gruesomely cut short on Sunday 27, October 2019 as she was hit by bullets from gunmen who attacked her family close to the brewery at 9th Mile, Enugu State.

Kendra's father, Mr Onyeabor, a banker in Enugu was driving his family (wife and three kids) back to Enugu town on Sunday evening. They were returning from the village (Eke in Udi Local Government Area, Enugu State) when tragedy struck!

The gunmen appeared from the surrounding bushes and started shooting at their vehicle. Onyeabor was brave enough to continue driving amidst the shots. The wife sustained gunshot wounds on her arms but Kendra was not as lucky as her stomach was ripped open by bullets. She was rushed to a nearby hospital at 9th Mile. An operation was quickly performed on her at the theatre but she could not make it as she died in the early hours of Tuesday 29th October. She was buried at her hometown, Eke in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State same day.

May her gentle and innocent soul rest in perfect peace! Amen!!!

Yesterday, I met a man at the hospital where Kendra was rushed to who was also shot at that same spot few minutes before the incident that claimed Kendra's life happened.

Several attacks have been witnessed lately at that 9th Mile. Gun throttling men now confidently operate at that spot with security agencies doing nothing to bring to book those behind this evil act!

I am calling on Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the governor of Enugu State to employ all possible means to check the security challenges in the state! Travellers' lives are in danger. Providing security for residents of the state is not just the duty of the government and security agencies, it is a core part of their duties!!! Enugu State used to be a peaceful state. What happened?

A young and promising life has been cut short by marauding gunmen who have been allowed to thrive due to security negligence. Tomorrow, it could be anyone.

Governance goes beyond media propaganda!
