Hmm

Our budget for the new year is 20billion dollars. Meanwhile, countries like the US and the UK would probably be spending more than two times that amount of education.

Meanwhile, we aren't earning enough from oil. Oil is at $60 per barrel. We need it at $139 per barrel to earn enough so as not to borrow.

Meanwhile our universites are chronically underfunded. The VC of ABU said, in a speech some two years ago that his overhead costs are N120million annually (and ABU is a very large university occupying a large landmass...so that cost might be an underestrimate). Government gives them N50million for overheads. Where is he going to get the remaining 70million.

The short term solution is fee increases, or we cut fuel subsidy and add the N450BILLION to education's budget...or we take another loan.
and politicians salary increase abi

Just recently I asked my juvenile cousin who stay in one of the hostels and he said it is even worse.

I honestly dont know how people really do defend Nigeria and form patriotic. Nigeria is the most useless something I have ever seen on earth becus the country has money but has foolishness as her priority!

I schooled in UNN and we graduated in 2013 and we used same toilet where we poo on top of poos! It was horrible state of my life. Nigerians were short changed by nature. It is crime to be born here.

Yes, we could cut the polticans salary...but the problem is, at best it would just give us N500billion naira. At best.

Meanhwile, we need, according to the ASUU-FG agreement of 2009...some 1.5 trillion naira in annual extra funding for universites. (and the sum has gone up since we have established more government run universites since 2009)

or maybe we bit the bullet and come to the reality that it is no longer feasible to make university education free for everybody.
there are too many people who have no business being in a university.

I couldn't help but reply to you.

In the long run, it is inefficient for the government to fund universities. Every university must fund itself, and I have argued that the easiest way is through fees, before government grants and commercialising research output. The fees charged in the UK, US, Australia and Canada reflect the cost per student. Subsidising education in a large population like ours is daft. It is unsustainable.

That's what I keep saying...but the problem is, saying such in Nigeria means you support the 'opression of poor Nigerians'.

(And to be frank, some university students enter university here broke. I know one guy, who in 2004 got admission and had only N2000 at hand. Meanwhile his fees at the time were N17-18000 naira. Anyway, the guy graduated sucessfully..and is doing well. One of my mates got admitted to read medicine. Had to defer admission because no money.).

The truth is, Nigeria is going to have to increase fees. The problem is, the opposition is great to it, because truthfully, many potential students are poor.

I wholesomely agree with you. The problem is that any government that take the step of removing subsidy on education will be committing a political suicide, which is more important to those that govern us. The nation has been bastardized on the alter of selfish interest and the ignorance of most Nigerians is abetting it.

I agree with you bro.Especially at your last statement

We are more blessed with Natural and Mineral Resources than most of these Scandinavian countries if not all of them (yea, you heard me right, all of them).

We have not been harnessing these resources. And from the crude oil industry, what we see is massive theft and corruption. The other day (last week thereabouts) the EFCC uncovered massive looting in the power industry where one individual cornered over 2 billion Naira (or even 20 billion) to himself after collecting the money, he didn't honour the contract he was paid to do. Now, why would power failure not be persistent?

Yes that's the harsh truth...and anytime I make this argument you have made...I recall the number of very poor but gifted students who went to university with me who were really broke...and who if fees were not low, might have ended up like one security personell at my dad's former working place....passed SSCE with straight A, could not go to unviersity because father was a really really poor village farmer)...and to be honest, it does make me feel uncomfortable.

But let's be frank, it is either we face the cold reality...or our universites are going to be broke, and are going to turn out poor quality graduates as a result. ...while the rich kids flee to the new private universites. (which are catching up to the public ones.) And the poor we want to help would suffer.

Bro, there can be scheme to support this category of students in the form of scholarship. However, I reckon the last time we had such development-oriented and transparent scholarship scheme for Nigerians are gone. This is the fault of successive government in the country. Let us tell ourselves the bitter truth, education is expensive. What you pay for is what you get. It is not cheap in most universities abroad too.

True that. all i have to do is look at some peoples DPs in my uni group. OBJ was the only good thing that came out of PDP. the OBJ years ELEVATED people. so many of my classmates entered telco and are now FRESH. but it is no longer sustainable. and making school expensive might reduce the cult problem

All the Nordic countries put together have a population that is barely ten percent of Nigeria's population. So subsidising education for a huge number of students is unsustainable. Ask Soludo and Bismark Rewane if I am lying.

In case you are also not aware, Sweden has started charging fees for international students.

I am not anti-development, I am looking for solutions. Let's change the mindset of focusing on the problems. When we find solutions, making money becomes automatic.

Find out how the universities in South Korea are driving national development. Which university in Nigeria has taken up research in the efficacy of agbo jedi jedi to enhance sexual performance and commercalizing it? But men would rather buy viagrs. When one Lebanese see am now commercialise, we'd shout there are no jobs, when jobs are looking at us everyday.

You guys always shout how schools in abroad is very expensive but fail to mention the standard of living of the citizens living abroad. Minimum wage in Nigeria is 18k, which is not stable. A governor may decide not to pay his workers for 2 years and nothing will happen. Arebgeshola was paying his workers half payment for years. Just imagine someone earning 18k but was giving half payment, which is 9k. Please, what is he going to use it for? Can that even feed him and his family for two weeks talk more of paying 1 million naira for school fees?

If ordinary citizens could have this mentality without considering poor people or the civil servants that the government are treating bad, then we really deserve the kind of our leaders. We are perfect for each other.

Bro, I am not in for this back and forth. As you can see, I gave government their fair share. Don't explain to me what the government did wrong or bad. We have been having successive visionless governments since the 70s. So, I don't need your explanation on that. Which of the government has done anything good for the masses? All of them are mad, so don't bring one person's name to this discourse as if the rest are any good. By the way, you hardly see any government owe academic/university lecturers salaries.

The point I am driving is that EDUCATION IS EXPENSIVE!

Until y'all realize that fact, we will be deep in this mess. I am not rich too and I am not trying to be egoistic. Please!
