From stained fingers to bad breath, smoking is widely known to cause a range of unpleasant side effects.

Now, scientists have warned that heavy tobacco usage can actually make your face look older.

In the study, researchers from the University of Bristol looked at two groups of people from the UK Biobank.

The first group contained 182,961 participants who had never smoked, while the second contained 150,831 people who were either current or former smokers.

In their analysis, the researchers searched across 18,000 traits, and compared them in the two groups.

The results revealed that people who were either current or smokers were likely to have more rapid facial ageing, as well as worse lung function, and higher risk of skin cancer.
Louise Millard, who led the study, said: “We proposed a novel approach that can be used to search for causal effects of health exposures, and demonstrated this approach to search for the effects of smoking heaviness.

“We searched across thousands of traits to identify those that may be affected by how heavily someone smokes.

“As well as identifying several known adverse effects such as on lung health, we also identified an adverse effect of heavier smoking on facial ageing."

The NHS also highlights the effects of ageing on your skin in its ‘Why Quit?’ help page.
It writes: “Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to your skin. This means that if you smoke, your skin ages more quickly and looks grey and dull. The toxins in your body also cause cellulite .

“Smoking prematurely ages your skin by between 10 and 20 years, and makes it three times more likely you'll get facial wrinkling, particularly around the eyes and mouth. Smoking even gives you a sallow, yellow-grey complexion and hollow cheeks, which can cause you to look gaunt.

“The good news is that once you stop smoking, you will prevent further deterioration to your skin caused by smoking.”
