There have been several reports on road accidents due to engineering defect at the roundabout between Games Village and Apo- Garki Area 1 route, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. This particular spot has claimed over 100 lives the latest being 34 year old Mr Mohammed Gambo Maina(see full report below). If you ply this route, please drive carefully.

A tragic death of an upwardly mobile 34 year old Mr Mohammed Gambo Maina, son of one of Nigeria’s  most powerful and influential families, Alhaji Umar Joji Maina, the Dan-maliki of Mubi in Adamawa State, and Hajia Zainab Maina, has thrown Abuja , Nigeria’s capital city into deep mourning.

Mr. Mohammed Gambo Maina, born on November 11th, 1976, was killed as a result of excessive bleeding resulting from a serious gash in his head when a Toyota RAV 4 he drove in, with his friend somersaulted due to engineering defect in the road intersection at the roundabout between Games Village and Apo- Garki Area 1 route, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The Friday preceding Mohammed’s crash and unfortunate death, there had been multiple crashes at the same spot. And on the same Saturday, three fatalities had been recorded from the same point. Altogether that silly and condemnable construction error has claimed over 100 lives. The axis has become Abuja’s Bermuda Triangle. Civil society groups are up in arms against Julius Berger, routing to sue the expatriate, German, company, acclaimed to be Nigeria’s number one ranking construction local champion. In Germany the company is ranked 20th.

Sadly enough, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Vehicle Inspection Office, and the FCT Administration are all guilty of turning the other side while the ground at the poorly engineered site has continued to suck Nigerian’s blood.

Mohammed was a graduate of University of Maiduguri where he read Public Administration. He graduated with First Class. His death was one too many for the family which had lost two other children in the last four years. Hassan Maina, who lived in the United States of America, was visiting Nigeria when he was knocked down and killed by an Abuja hit and run driver, at a high brow Maitama District where his family resided. “The car ran over him killing him on the spot and took off.” Sharpedgenews.com was told on Tuesday.

The double jeopardy involved in the matter is that Mohammed with the middle name Gambo, symbolic of his place as the next child to a set of twins, is in  the fact he, out of his six other siblings was the closest to his mum, he turned down an offer to work in the civil service. Instead, he went into private business and also assisted his mother, the former President of National Council for Women Societies, NCWS, to manage her civil society organization, Women for Peace Initiative, WOPI. “He managed it so well” said one of the people who spoke with our reporter.

His immediate younger brother, Babangida is overwhelmed and devastated. He called on Nigerian activists to fix the blood sucking portion of the road so that his brother Mohammed, would not have died in vein Babangida said that “another Nigerian does not have to die before we do the proper thing” Mohammed died because help did not come in time “ we will not question the will of Allah. He gives, he takes. May He grant him Aljanah”.

The body of Mohammed was released by the National Hospital in Abuja, on Sunday morning. The process was complicated initially but after the family obtained police report, the remains of Mohammed was released and he was immediately buried according to Islamic rites.

The Maina family also picked the hospital bills for Mohammed’s injured traveling companion. He has been back to his parents after treatment at the National Hospital, Abuja. Mohammed was survived by two brothers, two sisters and his parents.” The family needs prayers as they have seen too many tragedies lately” a sympathizer told sharpedgenews.com.

Rest in peace, the dead people. But I am not sure of what the reporter means by Engineering defect on that round about. I think it is due to excessive speed while people enter the round abouts and failure to observe the give way rule. Even though there are bumps on the approach to the round about to slow down vehicles, I think some just speen un nucessarily around that area.
