Premier League referees are to be encouraged to make more use of pitchside VAR monitors, referees' chief Mike Riley is expected to tell clubs later this week.

All 20 top-flight clubs will be represented at a meeting with Riley in central London on Thursday.

Top of the agenda will be the ongoing controversies around VAR, which continued on Saturday when Sheffield United had a goal ruled out at Tottenham because of a marginal offside decision.

Riley will be quizzed about various VAR issues, including inconsistencies in decision-making and the time it takes for rulings to be made, which in some instances have been several minutes after goals are scored.

It is acknowledged that solutions are not straightforward. However, it is anticipated Riley will tell clubs the on-field referee will make more use of monitors.

It was envisaged that would happen from the point VAR came into use in the Premier League but Riley advised referees not to use them in order to prevent additional delays.

It is now felt the on-field referee is best placed to make marginal calls because they are more aware of the flow of the game and the atmosphere at the time.

The EPL is responsible for the mess though because the other top 4 European leagues-LA LIGA, SERIA A, BUNDESLIGA and LEAGUE 1 allows the center referees to have a personal viewing from the pitch side monitor before making any final decisions except the EPL.

But a meeting of stakeholders has been scheduled for Thursday 14/11/2019 for a possible reversal of the the restriction in the EPL

ARSENE WENGER DELIVERS VERDICT on VAR after Mohamed Salah's goal for LIVERPOOL against MAN CITY

Liverpool's second goal against City was sent for a VAR check and the former Arsenal manager has had his say

Arsene Wenger says he backs VAR, but there must be changes to how the technology is used after Liverpool's clash against Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp's side beat Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield to move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with goals from Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane enough to seal three points.

But Salah's goal in the first half sparked controversy after being sent for a VAR check for offside.

The Reds forward nodded past Claudio Bravo after getting on the end of a cross from Andrew Robertson.

But a replay appeared to show that the Egpytian may have been marginally offside as the ball was played into the box.

VAR checked Salah's goal against City at the Stockley Park HQ, and the PGMOL released a brief statement that said: "VAR checked for possible offside, and confirmed that the Salah goal was correct."

Speaking as a pundit for beIN Sports, former Arsenal head coach Wenger says he supports the concept of VAR but feels the technology is the issue.

"It [VAR] is working but it is not working on all occasions. It's better than before, you have more right decisions especially on offsides for example.

"You have to make a rule, the only uncertainty about offside is the timing when you stop [to check]. It has to be super accurate, it has to be right.

"If you have a player, a quick player, and he makes approximately nine centimetres in 0.08 seconds that's a big distance.

That's why the moment when you block the image it's absolutely vital especially if you have 25 pictures per second.

"I'm delivering a message, at the moment it's [VAR] manual with the help of what they call the key eyes, but I think it has to be completely automatic."

OK maybe,.
but if the association of retired referees in the VAR room can not see an error or make a correct decision that 60% of football fans will agree with then I don't think it would effect any change if one man will decide

VAR is not being handled by retired referees actually and that is why they usually show the VAR officials before every kick off though.

What would happen is that, If there is a controversy, rather than relying solely on the VAR officials speaking with the center referees, they instead actually go View the monitor themselves since the center referees have the final say in football just like they usually overrule their assistants on the sidelines
