Another Update: From recent developments, this may no longer be the best time to buy a car. But it is still a good time.

Update: This statement was accurate in my opinion when I made it back in November 2010.  Whether that will still be the case for 2011 remains to be seen.

Having studied the US car auctions for the past two years, I can now say that this is the best time to buy a car from the US. There are primarily two reasons for this:

1. If you attend any auction in the US, you will see a large number of Nigerian car dealers. Most of these dealers have now concluded their shipping for the year since any car shipped now cannot be guaranteed to arrive before Christmas. This means that from now till January, there will be less competition and price wars at the auctions resulting in cheaper prices. It has already started happening. All types of cars are passing through auction now at very low prices and nobody is buying them.

2. Another reason for the declining attendance at auctions can be attributed to weather. Winter has officially begun in the US except in the West Coast. It will get colder as the months go by until March. During winter, people stay indoors as much as possible. The good thing about US auctions is that they are usually held once or twice a week come rain or shine. So one is likely to get a better deal on very cold or snowy days when attendance is low.

All you have to do is let me know the type of car you want and I will get it for you at the best possible price. The only disadvantage of buying now is that delivery cannot be guaranteed before Christmas. But if you don’t mind getting your car in January, go ahead and send your request to me. I will only require a 30% deposit to ship your car.

I can get a 2010 GLK 4Matic for you for 5.2M. The final price will depend on how you wish to ship it. RORO will cost $1000. But for a vehicle this expensive, it may be better to put it in a container. It's up to you. So you are looking at a final cost of 6M to 6.5M depending on the method of shipment.

The same goes for the 2007 CLS 550. Both are within the same price range.

Some NLers have notified me via email that they intend to buy a car in January or February. But by then, prices must have started going up again. January to April is when Americans usually have the most money. That is when the government send them refunds for the excess taxes they paid the previous year. In fact you can easily get a loan within that period by telling somebody you will pay them back once you get your tax refund.

In my opinion, prices will stay low from now till the end of December. So the best time to buy is now till December 31.
