The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) branch, has suspended all academic activities pending the payment of their unpaid arrears.

Lectures for the new academic session were billed to start on Monday.

The lecturers’ union had earlier issued a 10-day ultimatum to the university to pay their August, September and October salaries or face industrial crisis.

This paper gathered that the academics are being owed cumulative 11 months’ salary arrears by the Oyo and Osun governments.

In reaction to the ultimatum, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Michael Ologunde, was said to have attributed non-payment of the salaries to non-release of subvention to it by the two co-owners, Osun and Oyo.

However, the union at a congress held on Monday, decided to embark on a lecture boycott.

In a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, the chapter’s chairman, Abiodun Olaniran, explained that the union members resolved to suspend all academic activities until the arrears are settled.

In the last two years, LAUTECH has experienced several industrial actions over unpaid salaries and workers’ entitlements.

Moreover, the two owner states, on several occasions, have been at loggerheads over who has defaulted in releasing subventions.

OSUN INTERVENES

On Wednesday, the Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, released N472 million for the payment of salary arrears of the staff and its teaching hospital in Osogbo.

According to a letter signed by the State Commissioner of Finance, Bola Oyebamiji, and addressed to the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Oladapo Afolabi, the release of the fund was aimed at ensuring financial stability in the university.

The governor noted that the release of the fund was in line with the earlier agreement reached at a meeting in Abuja between Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde and himself on the need to ensure “financial stability and sustainability” of the institution.

Although the government claimed to have released money, the workers are yet to be paid.

When PREMIUM TIMES contacted the spokesperson of the school, Fadeyi Olalekan, he said he is not aware of the industrial action as he is currently in Ibadan.

Meanwhile, some students of the institution who spoke with this reporter confirmed the lecture boycott.

“The Division of students’ affairs has addressed us. They told us the lecturers will be coming to the office but won’t lecture,” a student, Hamzat Mariam, said.

clueless oyetola have started following the footsteps of his predecessor Aregbesola. workers are owed salaries, now Lautech lecturers have started their strike already. the clueless governor can buy expensive vehicles to his commissioners and SSA but he cannot pay workers and teachers salaries.

Yet you continue to wail about Osun state that you posted has released 472M for LAUTECH.

What is the PDP govt of Oyo doing about it, At least LAUTECH is on Oyo territory and 80% of the staff and assets are in Oyo State

Osun has its own state University and are not going on strike like Lautech

What Oyo should do is to buy out the stake of Osun in Lautech and fund the school on its own

Lets see what "Saint" Makinde would do since all of "Devil"Ajimobi's strict sugestion and policy to end constant strike and make Lautech accountable and sustainable by auditing their internal revenue (tuition, acceptance fee, PGD tuition, Predegree fees, Hospital patient charges Lautech water Lautech Bakery)or capturing Lautech Payroll system were hurriedly thrown out and he was called constituited authority

Ajimobi wanted a restructed tuition to complement Government Allocation(in a school where many are yahoo boys and olosho yet they want to pay next to nothing for education)

Ajimobi refused to slash Oyo's Federal Allocation by over 40% to cater for just one school filled with all sort of characters

He refused to give them any kobo unless they subject all their staffs both lecturing and non lecturing to be captured in Oyo State Payroll system

Governor Seyi Makinde should be worried on why LAUTECH has not been self-sufficient in terms of funding and academic advancement since its creation, while Osun State University which was created a few years ago is making ways financially and academically.

It is a known fact that Oyo had always wanted to own LAUTECH alone but it is our common patrimony and nobody can appropriate it through blackmail or whatever. Osun is not in any way forcing itself on the joint ownership of LAUTECH. The supposed ‘plan to split’ signed by former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and former governor Alao Akala was a ruse. There is a legal and sincere process to be followed if Oyo state is indeed interested in taking over LAUTECH. Osun government will be happy if Governor Makinde initiates that process.

Osun has always been cheated on LAUTECH: only one (1) out of the eight (cool academic faculties is in Osun, while Oyo has about twice of the staff strength of the University. Osun single-handedly funded the infrastructure development in the LAUTECH campus in Osun; also 85 per cent of the total institution’s infrastructure is in Oyo, whereas funding is equally carried out. Despite this, we are fully committed to joint ownership of our joint heritage.

Lautech lecturers have been previously owed 8 months salary from the 2016/2017 session which led to a 10 month strike in 2017. Truth is Lautech is not self sustainable. With lots of corruption going on in the school with over 96 bank accounts which was discovered during the Ajimobi/Ogbeni era. The solution then was to increase school fees from 65k/72k to 90k/120k for returning students and 140k/170k for new students to fund payment of salaries but it seems this is not enough for a school with one of the highest number of Professors and Ph.D holders.

Possible scenarios are the money disbursed by the Osun state government last week which is for August salaries is either audio money or cabals in the school have taken a huge chunk of it. The owner governments need to do more to cut leakages in the school if there is and step up their game in resolving this crisis
